Reloading for the 7.62 x 54R PRS
« on: August 22, 2009, 02:18:33 PM »
The only load data I can find for the 7.62x54R list a .308 bullet. My bore is .311 and I plan on using .311 bullets, do I need to cut back on the powder charge 10% or just use the starting load?  The load data I have from the Hodgdon site list 46 grains as start, under a 150 grain bullet.  150 grain bullets is suposed to be max bullet wieght for the PRS.  It doesn't list primmers eigther, I plan on using CCI as I have plenty of them, and I'll assume regular primmers and not magnums?

Thanks, Will

Will,

Use the starting loads and you'll be fine.

it's been a long time since i reloaded for the 7.62x54R, but that is what i did. Starting loads are just fine. I used IMR 4064 and Hornady .311 or .312 bullets, 150gr, spire point. It worked best at about halfway between starting and maximum loads. CCI 200 primers.

My current favorite load for 7.62X54R is 49 grains of IMR4895, and a .311" 147 grain FMJBT.

Thanks, I gave 46 grains of H4895 a try and so far like it.  I may up it a little, but first I need to borrow a buddy's chrono to make sure I'm getting the velocities I think I am.  Not as hard to reload as I though it'd be.  This is my first high powered rifle reloading, been doing pistol ammo for a while now, and 45-70 and 45-75.

Look for bullets for the .303 British. They are .311

Thanks, I was using .311 barnes x and sierra bullets.  Wish I could find a boat tailed 150 grainer in .311

I was getting sooty cases until I got to 49 grains of IMR 4895.

I wasn't getting sooty cases, and they functioned the action, but were not what I'd call hard recoiling.  What were you shooting them in?  I've got several Nagants and there chambers vary.

Thanks

I haven't tried any of my loads in my nagants yet, but I don't want to stress the action on the PRS, the bolt guns can stand a lot hotter load.  Of course till I chrono and confirm where I'm at it's a mute point.  I need to get some time together and see what I can see.  Definatly want as hot as I can get it while being in safe levels.

Thanks.
