Etrex acting up
« on: August 22, 2009, 04:40:31 PM »
I've been using an Etrex for a few years and it's saved me from taking the "scenic route" back to the truck a couple times. Lately though, the page button doesn't work once it's locked on to satellites. I can change pages fine while it's searching for the satellites, but once it says "ready to navigate" it locks up. Any ideas? I've tried different new batteries. Garmin wants $59 to look at it, but I have a 60Cx on order so I'm not really concerned about fixing it.

Thanks,
Dwayne

Have you connected the eTrex to your computer and using Garmin’s Web Updater made sure the unit software is up to date?
An option with risks to do a master reset.  If you do that you will have to repower the unit and set it where it can update the almanac.

The above may not work because I am leaning towards a mechanical problem, not a software problem.
If you have not downloaded Web Updater you might want to for your new 60Cx.

A USB to Mini USB cord should come with your 60Cx.

I do not recall a communications cord being provided with the basic eTrex, it was an optional item.  So you maybe out of luck regarding updating.

It maybe worth your while to send the older unit in.  Normally Garmin returns and new unit or a rebuilt unit to the customer.  At one time I had four handheld units, I gave one to my son and one to my brother.  I currently have two and will share one when on a family outing or hunting.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!

Thanks for the heads up about Garmins updater, I will definately use it for my 60Cx. I did not get the optional cord for the Etrex, probably should have. I was playing around with the Etrex this morning and decided to try to reset it by pulling the batteries out while powered up like I have to do to my BlackBerry sometimes. It may just be a coincidence but it seems to be working now. I'll try doing the master reset if it continues acting up.

Thanks for all your input, I learn a lot reading your posts!

I got an older eTrex Legend from my dad cuz he couldn't figure it out. Seemed to work fine so I looked around and found the data cable online for only $13.94 shipped to my door. Now I have the software all updated and it seems to work better than ever. Here's the address if you'd like to get one.
