CZ Question. Sorry I have so many....I am new here.
« on: August 23, 2009, 12:59:50 PM »
OK, I have been thinking hard all week......I can buy a cheap sxs now, or wait a month and purchase a CZ Bobwhite.

What would you do? If you were to get a CZ, would you get a 12 ga. with 26 or 28 inch barrel. I really want a gun that I can hunt turkeys with in the fall, as well as small game birds and rabbits. Would a CZ be good for this?

Is CZ a good choice and how much can I expect to pay for a new one? I have only been online looking....not sure where the cheapest place would be to buy one.

Lastly, if you have a CZ, how does it shoot 3 inch magnum shells?

Thanks in advance.

Wait and get the Bobwhite. But really if just for turkeys you'd do better with a pump.

I will hunt fall turkey with it......but i want a gun that i can also use for grouse and ringnecks.....and of course rabbits.

Would you get a 26 or 28 inch barrel?

Does anyone know how the bobwhite handles magnum loads......let's say federal 3" number 5's or 6's?

How much can I expect to pay for a new one?

Wait and get the CZ Bobwhite, I have had two of them for years one in 20 ga. and the other in 28.  Never had anyproblems with either.

I think what you should do is get a 12 ga pump for the turkeys and a 20 ga Bobwhite for the wingshooting. I do not know on the 3" magnum loads and personally consider most 12 ga SxS guns just too bulky for me. I seriously doubt you're gonna wanna fire many of those 3" loads in the light weight gun.

I thank you for your opinion. I am not a big 20 ga. fan.......maybe in a few years when I no longer can get around in the woods and don't want a little weight to carry, but I just like the 12 ga. Not sure why, just do.......

As for turkey hunting, you don't think a double barrel will do the trick? I would love t hear everyone's opinion for or against using a sxs in the fall turkey woods. (not spring......I have a mossberg 835 with a scope for that purpose, and it is on a 7 year no miss streak!)

I have  Bobwhite in a 20g and it's a great bird gun. Never thought of shooting heavy turky loads-sort of scary since the gun is so light. I use an old 870 in 12 for turkey. It is the perfect turkey gun.

For your question on barrel length, if it was my money, I would get the 28" barrel.  I had a 28" auto for a number of years and when I upgraded to an O/U, i got one with a 26" barrel.  The gun didn't feel right to me.  I felt like I was accelerating through the clays on the skeet range and then had to try to slow my gun down to let the target catch up.  That made for a very choppy swing and didn't feel comfortable at all.  I put a 28" barrel on the gun and it feels great now.  I ordered a set of 20ga barrels for it a week ago and ordered them in 28" as well.  I've never owned a S X S but I would expect similar performance.

I gave up on short barrels on SxS or O/U years ago and go with 28" to 30" always. Sure a SxS will kill a turkey but as light as they are it might do the same to your shoulder with those heavy mag loads. Just not a real good plan if you ask me. A 20 ga is all the bird gun you need. Many folks use 28 and even .410 on close flushing birds.

What can I say.......I think I am in love!

CZ Bobwhite 12 ga. is the ticket. Shot Federal 3" number 5's at 35 yards and it is dead on.....with Full and Imp. Full chokes, it is great. Also tried some 7 1/2 federals.......really great.

The gun is perfect with the 28" barrel.......and it doesn't kick that bad at all with magnum loads.

I think I have found a gun that I can hunt EVERYTHING with.........

Congradulations, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.  Son shoots a DeHaan SO 12 ga. for waterfowl with 3" loads with no problems, he really likes the gun.   I like my 20 and 28.  Oh yes Dehaan's were made by Huglu which makes the CZs

You just don't have to shoot heavy 3" ammo for bird hunting, quit trying to shoot them at 50 and 60 yards, and let them get closer!  At least it works for me and my 16ga...
