Almost done with summer project
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:36:56 PM »
It is my summer project that is almost ready to fire, just need to make the ram and swab, and a worm. 2 inch bore, 40-inch tube, 110 lbs., and #2 pattern naval carriage out of red oak, a very fun build!

That is a very nice looking piece, fine workmanship. Looks like you used something like Minwax red oak stain and polyurethane for the finish.

FTB1-SS,

That is one fine lookin' tube & carriage; did you pattern the barrel after a Blakely, Sawyer Rifle, or did you improvise? Whatever the case may be, in my humble opinion if awards were given by someone on this board, you'd certainly be given one. Hey, wait a second, awards are bestowed upon those that merit them with their excellent craftsmanship, by one of the individuals that makes up the dynamic duo of moderators that have the sometimes underappreciated job of keeping our board sailing on an even keel.
I'll bet that one of those moderators who has the sole power to depress the KEWPIE AWARD button might be a little preoccupied at this time with scything down amber waves of grain, or scouting out hunting grounds, or some such thing. ;)

I took the Brooks pattern for something to start with, and it lives in the house. Thanks

FTB1-SS,

You know, the more I look at your scale rendition of a Federal 4 truck carriage from the mid 1800's, the more impressed I am with your attention to detail. This time period would have signalled the beginning of the end for the wooden 4 truck carriages, because they were soon to become outmoded by other designs. The last hurrah for these carriages was probably their use on Union river gunboats during the Civil War.
From what I can tell by looking at the drawings that I have, you have the cross bolts through the cheeks at the right places, the side tackle bolts are placed on the top of the last step where they're supposed to be, (and at the correct angle, I might add) you have a train tackle bolt on the rear axletree, a transporting bolt on the front axletree, and you've even included the 2 brackets that are attached on the inside rear of the cheeks, that were intended to hold the handspikes used in traversing the carriage. Very impressive indeed.
