.243 to 6mm AI??
« on: August 23, 2009, 05:32:48 PM »
Just posing a question me and a fellow gun nut were mulling over?  Thinking of the ultra 26" fluted bull, taking it to a gunsmith and having the work done. Rounding up Ackley Improved dies and 6mm brass? Wondering if anyone might know the twist rate?   Thanks in advance    Wade

I think the Ultra only comes in a 24" barrel for the .243 Winchester and if you check in the FAQ's, you will find that it is a 1 in 10" twist rate, as well as many more useful facts. Take some time and look through there as it is borderline mandatory, and welcome aboard!

You can launch the 95 grain SMKs, my favorite!  ;D

As Mitch said, H&R doesn't make a 26" 243 barrel, I've got the laminated thumbhole Ultra Varmint that I had rechambered to 6mmAI, shoots real good, but I need to do some forend work on it.  ;)

Yes, thanks Tim, I was hoping it would be a good transition, luckily I know a pretty good gunsmith and can have the work done very resonable.  I was looking at the 25-06 first and kinda superimposed the 26" from it, I am thinking 24 should do just fine and the 1 and 10 should launch the 70 grainers at a blistering rate, I am thinking that Barnes makes a varmit grenade in a 62, wich should be a hoot.
