so how are your hunts going?
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:16:26 AM »
Quite a few Alaskan seasons are open now and I'm curious how folks are faring. I hear its real slow for moose in my area so far. Hope to get out soon now that I'm off my recent job commitment. Congrats to Sourdough on his success. Hope my knees and ankles hold up.  3 days research trawling on a commercial boat went well for me but my knees complained a little.  Really was pretty light duty but some of the students got real green.

At least have my rifle sighted in and some new gear arrived and ready.
Good luck all.

I got draw for a cow moose tag in FMA. I scouted last Saturday and got within 30 yards of 3 moose, 1 bull, and a cow with a full grown calf. Don't know if I'll shoot one because of the 2 caribou my son and I shot earlier this month.

I loaned a friend my 44 mag and a spotting scope, so he could hunt/scout for caribou somewhere north of Coldfoot. He and three buddies came back the next day with 3 nice bulls. Six miles in and they nearly got ran over by a herd of 24 caribou.

Don't just congratulate me, KP and his son got half the animals on that hunt.  Nice job KP and Kyle.

Its a lovely chilly breezy day and I'm champing to go. Tomorrow it is. Chill and wind might keep down the noseeums and hopefully get the bulls to wandering a little. Course with no bugs they might be happy to keep still.

Heard of a couple guys getting a moose so there is hope.

Sourdough, I love hunting caribou, hope our herd bounces back.

Going into the hills along the Yukon.  Have never hunted there before will see how it works out.

Had the easiest moose hunt of all time today.   Headed out right after first light, made it about 1/2 mile down the trail and buddy spotted a fork horn, 4x2.   Three shots later drug it to the trail with the 4 wheeler,  drove my truck back to it and used the winch on our machines to pull it up on the trailer, loaded the wheeler behind it and on the road in less than 1 hour.  Kind of hard to beat ahunt like that.

Really impressed with the 168gr TSX out of my 300 RUM.   Great penetration and obvious expansion.    Even at 3400+ fps impact velosity.

good for you.  Any hunt I do will be much harder. But I know you appreciate your good luck.
The meat should be wonderful with such gentle handling and quick removal.
Thanks for the performance report too.

Believe me they aren't all this easy.  Generally we have 10-17 mile trip on the wheelers before climbing up the hills to glass.  Just happened across this one on the way in.   We all get lucky once and a while.

I shot a huge cow Friday evening on Ft Wainwright. It's hard to say, but I think she was right at 1000 lbs. I wasn't able to take leave this year during moose season, but got lucky anyway with an FMA cow tag. The hunt didn't require a lot of skill, but I was thrilled.

My 16 year old daughter decided to come along with me. We stalked a good size cow for nearly 3 hours, until finally loosing her for good. I think she crossed the Chena, but who knows. Then I drove down the road to a really good looking spot. Sure enough I found a 35 - 40 inch bull with 3 or 4 cows. I called a friend to make sure he wasn't busy and had a place to keep her. Everything was good to go for a shot and he wanted me to take the biggest, so I did. Like always, she looked like a car laying there in the thickest Spruce trees I've ever seen. Now it's Sunday night, she's deboned and chilling in our refridgerators. We'll finish the grinding, wrapping, etc ...... throughout the week.

Best part.... a 16 year girl still wants to go hunting with dad.

good going KP!  Should be dandy eating.  My season ended with no moose in the freezer but I had some good experiences. I'm really glad I bought the Eureka Northern Breeze screen tent. I'm glad I got the Coleman Northstar propane lantern, and I'm most happy that I took my 11 yr son for the last 5 day hunt. He did well getting up in the dark at 6:30 am and hunting until dark at 9:30 or or every night.  A lot of the time was spent standing quietly and banging on trees to attract a bull's response.  NO responses except cows. We saw mink, otters, beavers, water fowl and a marten. The day after the season my son shot his first 2 ducks so it was a good time. Now for winter season.
