Thinking of picking up the new rem 7mm ultra mag. Any thoughts on the new caliber?

I'm thinking it may not be around very long, and ammo will be very expensive.  How much is it superior to a 7mm Rem Mag or a 7MMSTW?

It all depends what you plan on doing with it.  I think that if you are planning on shooting the heavier stuff, lets say 160's and up at longer ranges, I think it may a good caliber.  I've thought about one of the super fast 7mms myself for longer shots.

If you are reloading, I wouldn't worry about factory ammo availability.  I do not let that choose my rifles for me.  Besides .22 and military surplus that I run in both my .308 and 5.56 ar's, I don't remember the last time my guns have seen factory ammo.

I would be using if for deer, elk, moose and caribou. I like the fact that buy looking at the ballistics it looks like just hold dead on out to 300 and high on the shoulder at 400. That's with 0 at 250 with 140 gr.

This is coming from personal experience with a .280 loaded hot (your 7mm will be a lot faster).  You do not want to use 140's unless you are using premium fodder like the Accubonds or bonded bullets.  I use the 140 gr Gamekings.  Although they are very accurate, they open up very quickly inside of 150 yards or so.

I think that in your case, you would benefit more from the heavier, high bc bullets like the Berger VLD Hunting.  I've heard they do a fantastic job on antelope up to elk.  Check them out and compare the ballistics to the 140's (drop, wind drift, energy).  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how similar the ballistics are between the two.

Very flat shooting. I nailed a caribou at 310 yards and didn't even have to worry about aiming a little high.

If you see a box of ammo, buy it. I don't know if I'd call it rare yet but not everyone carries it. I have about a hundred rounds stashed. I figure between shooting and reloading this should last me a while.

It does thump you pretty good so it's not a plinking round. ;)

If I remember correctly the stock remington ammo comes with corelokt bullets.

Before you buy anything do your homework. What are you going to use it for? what kind of performance do you want? Are you reloading your own ammo? among other things. I bought a Savage 7mm-mag. I love the gun and the round. I had certain things i was looking to get out of a long range shooter and made my choice based off that. There is no perfect choice, just the best choice for you. Good luck.

My youngun has one. A right pretty 700(blue and glossy wood).
Like others have said, ammo is expensive and scarce. Recoil ain't all that bad, but it's more than a standard 7 mag. Personally, I don't think it has all that much over the Rem mag to justify the ammo price or recoil.

When I was about 30 years old, I would have bought one in a heart beat because I wanted all the speed and flat tragectory I could find.  I am now twice that age and much prefer a rifle that is lighter to carry than a magnum weight rifle.  I've always reloaded.

I know what is required of a deer, and have read that caribou do not require large rifles.  Don't know bull about a moose except that every moose I have come across seemed pretty darn big to me.  Your 7 ultra mag mag be the ticket for everything.  I expect a 300 Win will do everything on your list also.

I love 7mm bullets for deer.  So much that I use five different cartridges in this caliber.  I've also had both shoulders repared and they hunt 24/7, every day of the year.  That 7 Ultra might be a little too much for my aging anatomy.

I load my 7MM STW to 3550 fps with 140-grain Nosler Ballistic Tips (26-inch barrel). With a 300-yard zero maximum point of impact above the line of sight is about 2.75 inch and drop at 400 yards is around 7 inches. It makes hitting stuff out to 400 yards easy. I don't think the velocity from the Ultra Mag is much higher, but to my way of thinking, more is better if long range is the goal.

I don't reload. I would would only shoot maybe a box or two of ammo a year , so price if ammo is not too much of an issue. I've shot some big guns,300um,10ga,7mm so i kind know what to expect for recoil (I think?). Looking at the numbers my 270 loaded with 140 light mags vs what my bro shoots in his 139 gr hornady , they are almost the same and believe it or not it is packing more punch at 400 yards.

.270 Win., 140 gr. BTSP light mag

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle   100 yd   200 yd   300 yd   400 yd   500 yd
3100/2987   2900/2614   2709/2280   2525/1982   2349/1715   2180/1477
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle   100 yd   200 yd   300 yd   400 yd   500 yd
        -1.50    1.30          0.00              -6.10   -17.60   -35.40

7MM Rem. Mag., 139 gr. BTSP

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle   100 yd   200 yd   300 yd   400 yd   500 yd
3150/3062   2933/2655   2727/2294   2529/1974   2341/1691   2160/1440
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle   100 yd   200 yd   300 yd   400 yd   500 yd
-1.50    1.30           0.00          -6.00      -17.40   -35.10

In my eyes I already have a 7mm. Looking for a little more punch is all. Think the 7 rum is just what i'm looking for.

I wouldn't consider those velocities average for a .270.  When my .280 is loaded hot with 140's, I can reach 3100, almost.

Red, I have not had the new Rem. 7, but over the years I have used the 7mm08, 280, 7mmRem  and 7mm stw. The only 7mm I still own is a rebarrel 700 in 7mm Wea. With the long rem. action a guy can seat the bullet out the the base of the neck. With this arrangement this 7mm is a real dandy. It will kick along a 160 grain bullet at 3250fps. and a 140 at 3500fps. Maybe faster, I havent used the 140's much. the only thing I would be leery of with this new caliber is the brass, it could either be expensive or very difficult to obtain. To me this little caliber is the top of the line, BUT I would say it must be made on a long action to seat the bullet out, and have a 26 inch barrel. An added plus is Wea. brass for the 7 can easily be formed from new 7mm Rem brass. ;D :D

I've decided to get just a 7mm and not the ultra mag. I don't reload and ammo for the ultra is far and few.I am thinking about a Rem sps ss.

If you don't reload, compare the ballistics of .270, .280, and 30/06 to 7mm mag before you buy the magnum. Ammo prices are becoming ridiculously expensive. Federal premium 7mm (160 grain nosler partition) is 49.95 a box at fleet farm. In my opinion the increase in price (and recoil) between the 7mm to the /06 doesn't justify a 200 fps difference in velocity.

I would be using if for deer, elk, moose and caribou. I like the fact that buy looking at the ballistics it looks like just hold dead on out to 300 and high on the shoulder at 400. That's with 0 at 250 with 140 gr.

I do that with my 7mm RM using MPBR zeros for a 6" target (maximum rise or drop of 3").  With a 140g North Fork @ 3214fps that is a 271 yard zero and +2.5" @ 100 yards.

No need to hold high on the shoulders at 400, either, as it's only about an 11" drop.

I own the 7mm Rem. Mag. And that rifle Is really fast, I shoot mostly The 160gr bullet at 3030fps the 140gr bullet at 3135fps and the 130 at 3400fps. the 7mm Rem is fast enought for me.

I think the 7 UM would be one of the best long range cartridges going. It should be a the highest velocity 7 out there. And the bullets available for .284 have great BC's.

All these rifles that shoot fast bullets aren't to good for deer. Unless you aim for the Vitles
You know the heart, brake a leg, then you have to cut its neck. It seems to me that faster isn't always better. I own the Rem 7mm Mag. I have killed a bore with it and the 160gr bullet DID not go threw it. I shot it in its heart.  Oh well to each his own.

I have a 7um and love it!  Great flat shooting.  Loaded some 140 grainers over 3400fps.  Have my 160's down about 3150 and they are really accurate.  For smaller bullets, you aren't going to get a whole lot more velocity because the 7um is a little overbore....  but once you get up over 140 grains, then it really starts to shine!!  I am thinking of loading some 175 grainers, but the 160's definitely have enough punch for moose and everything else in the UM.

The 7mag you are going with is plenty for everything though.  The ONLY thing I wouldn't hunt with it would be griz in cover.  I would hunt griz in open tundra with a 7mag/ultra though.  That is why I bought the .458lott though.... gotta have your bases covered... you know, say an elephant runs through my windows in Wasilla, AK... you never know.   ;D

Wierd thing about the Ultra mags: how much case capacity you have at max loads!  You need really slow powders to fill those things.... but then again you get reeeeal fast.

having shot both, I prefer the 7mm STW over the 7mm RUM. The RUM I shot had feeding probs, could have been the gun or the ammo. Both were accurate at 200+yds, but the STW was a shade more so. Also, I like the STW better because it can be rechambered in a Ruger #1.

Got my 7mmrm vanguard sub moa in.It shot great.I can put three touching with 150gr rem scirocco's.The trigger was real sharp on the corner and my finger was getting almost cut when I shot. I filed down the corner and some of the sharp corner of the safety and it feels much better. I broker in real good. I'll post the story in the hunting thread.

I have a 300 Weatherby. My load has always been 82 gr RL 22 and a 180 gr bullet.  I imagine a load with a 150 gr bullet could give the 7mm Ultra Mag a run for its money.

Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.
