Any 17 fireball updates?
« on: August 25, 2009, 08:17:27 AM »
I am looking for some updates from those of you who have rechambered your hmr to a 17 fireball.   I haven't heard any long term updates from any of you.  Since most people here post about problems rather than good news, I assume no news is good.

Do any of you have range reports or major problems after several hundred rounds?

Just looking for any major road blocks before having mine rechambered.

Thanks.

I didn't re-chamber a NEF, but I did re-barrel my Stevens 200 to a 17 Fireball. So far I shot about 250 rounds down the tube and I will say that I am very impressed with this "specialty caliber." I did this Fireball project specifically for fox hunting (which is why I call it a specialty caliber....fur friendly caliber).

IMHO, I would tell you to have it done. I do all my own reloading and even with the tiny 25gr bullets, these are not difficult to load. I've whacked lots of paper and a few groundhogs with 'em and with virtually no recoil, you can just watch through the scope as your target goes plop.

I had a 17hmr one time and sold it. I won't be selling this Fireball anytime soon. It's a keeper.

I'd like to get some range reports also, I just finished re-chambering another HMR barrel, so there are getting to be a few out there.  Larry

The PD shoot barrel was made up from a fairly high end barrel (Clerk) (sp?) so it isn't like a re-chamber of a 17 H&R barrel, although they are the same twist rate.  My 17 FB made up with a Clerk barrel but in a light weight shoots very well, I've posted this before but here it is again, hope yours does as well.  Larry

i have about 250 rounds through mine havent shot it in a little while been busy.  but it has claimed alot of praire dogs and one pup coyote at about 200 yards he didnt even know what hit him he just folded up.  i will try to get it on paper again but i dont see no problems one zero and i can still hit almost every praire dog to 300 yards with no wind and this is out of the pickup window with a sand bag on the action.

Are y'all fitting the barrels to SB2 frames or converting the Sportster frames to centerfire?  I'm pretty sure I know the answer...

The SS1 Sportster frame is cast iron, not a good choice even if it could be converted, rimfire barrels will fit fine on an SB2 frame.

OK, that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure.  The H&R website said they won't fit rf barrels to SB2 frames for obvious reasons but I didn't know the SS1s were cast iron.

Maybe we can use them for biscuits! ;D
