Bump in the road
« on: August 25, 2009, 11:46:41 AM »
Found out I'm being laid off at the end of next week due to a lack of work.

Not sure what I'll do.  The job prospects for a beat up 47 year old carpenter are probably none to good.  I'll be praying for the Lord to give me some direction and guidance and would appreciate my friends here at GBO puttin' in a word for me too.

I became job less at age 50 and am loving every minute of it tho I do have a retirement check coming in which I assume you won't. Best of luck to ya. There are gonna be a whole lot more joining you in unemployment before the current administration is done with us.

Sorry to hear that, Brett. With that much experience I would approach as many commercial property managers in your area as possible. Most are looking for a person with such skills. I was a property manager for a few years and they were always hard to find. It took me two months to find someone that could take down a wall and put up a wall down the hall.

I have one word for you CRAIGSLIST. You can advertise there for free in your local area. I just found out about it this past spring and have done many jobs this summer because of it. I live in Pa and as of this past July 1rst for you to do any remodeling or construction work in Pa you must have a Pa contractors license. I am happy to say as of today I am now a legal Pa contractor. I do expect to get more calls now due to that fact. Before when I ran an add there I was listed as unlicened. Many people will not even think of giving an unlicened contractor a call. I would run an add there for your services, just be sure you do not have to be licensed in your state or you could face steep fines like here. The steep fines is what made me get legal. Dale

BRETT. I'm truly sorry to hear that, I fear we're all going to see a lot of it. I work for walmart and thank God every day for it. I haven't had a 40 hr check in months, hours were even cut from Thanksgiving through Christmas, then more. Both sales and profits are good, go figger. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I must have missed this post Brett. Any good news yet? You bet I'll be "putting in a word" for you. Best of luck.

Thanks for the prayers skunk, and everyone else.  Well the good news is I have a new job lined up and I'm supposed to start next Tuesday.  The bad news is it is not a job I really have much desire to do.  But a guy has to do what a guy has to to suport his family.  I intend to keep my eyes open and pursue other prospects.

I've posted one idea I had in another thread and would like your input. http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,181838.msg1098884221.html#msg1098884221

Well, it was just announced on the news that that someone in the administration declared that the stimulus package is doing much better than they even hoped.  So, not to worry there, Brett.  You are about to be deluged with job offers.

Seriously, Brett, I think you will find that anyone who has equipped himself with skills will have a hard time avoiding work.  You do a good job for someone at a reasonable price and before you know it you'll have more work offers than you can handle.

Sure you might be able to help build the internment camp you'll one day be housed in. Make sure if you do you figure a way out and then maybe some of you can escape alive before the massacre starts.

Hmmm, Not a bad idea GB. I could install secret gates, passages and tunnels for use later.  Maybe I should change my screen name to Col. Robert E. Hogan  ;)

Brett.  I have seen many friends go through exactly what you are.  Some did great after wards, others didn't do too well.  From what I understand you have to deal with the situation as best you can, you may not like what you are doing, and may not draw the same wages but if it's a job that put food on the table, provides cover and clothes for you and the family then you are better off than some.

I am a firm beliver that the Lord will not place more on you than you can stand, grit your teeth and wade in and I am sure you will come out better for it.  My blessings to you and your family.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and words of encouragement.   I'm doing my best to keep in mind who is ultimately in control of all things. And trying to listen to see what it is He want's me to do and not what I want to do.
