Powder for High Volume Shooting (5.56 & 7.62)
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:11:52 PM »
I have a few AR15's in 5.56 and 1 AR10 platform in .308/7.62.  Since loaded ammo is extremely expensive, I would like to reload my own.  I am looking for a powder that is clean burning and efficient.

Also, I picked up a large amount amount of 108 gr frangible military bullets.  What powder and charge should I start with for this?  I was thinking about using 110gr VMax load data as a start.  (Starting at minimum charge of course)

I was thinking either Ramshot TAC or X-Terminator, or Varget.

Here's something different you probably won't hear anywhere else. For 3 gun and plinking I like H 4198 and Winchester FMJBT 55gr bullets with Federal 200 primers or Alcan "Max Fire" SR primers. The primers are ancient, but perform well with this load. More than accurate enough for my purposes, at just under 3000fps from my 16" ARs.

I have been using WIN 748 in my Bushmaster .223 reloads with 55 gr. FMJBTs and have been pleased with it's performance.  Specifically, I think the reloads with WIN 748 produce less fouling than some military ammunition I have used in the past.

For accuracy, you will not beat Varget.

I'll have to take a look at the H4198.  I have some Varget & W748 that I need to try.  I've had good luck with the 748 in my Bushy too.  I'm curious about the Varget.  It would be nice to use one powder for the .308 & .223 when loading bulk ammo.

BTW, I know what you mean about dirty military ammo.  I have a few hundred rounds thru my AP4 since the last cleaning and I am now having problems with jamming.

The nice thing about reloading the .308 and .223 is they both like some of the same propellants. What's worked for me in both are in this order:h-4895 ,imr4895 ,varget,748 ,and blc2.I would suggest everyone that loads rifle cartridges have one or more brands of 4895.I try 4895 in every load that has a listing for them. It's not always the best choice but it usually gives a useable load and often gives a great load.

H4198 may not give the best accuracy or velocity, but it's the most economical I've found. Lots of loads per pound and shoots into an inch or so most days. Works for me for my applications.

Try TAC, it is darn fine powder, made in Belgium I think, is cheap AND efficient.

yup that would be my answer too. Ramshot Tac if its for both the 308 and .223 and if its just for the .223 id try ramshot exterminator. Its a bit faster burning and that would make it even more economical. Nice thing is that there about the only powders suitable for loading these rounds thats even available right now.
