Replacement grips for M-83
« on: August 25, 2009, 05:38:51 PM »
Does anyone know of a source for aftermarket grips for the F/A 83. I know they are all individuals as they come from the factory, due to the way they finish each set of grips to each individual frame. I am just wondering if there is a place that will accept your grip frame for fitting, and what types of wood or other material will stand up to the recoil. I have an 83 in .475. I am not interested in Ivory, or white Micarta. I also know that the factroy will install the black Micarta for me, but I would like to hear from anyone who has hands on experience from an outside source.

+1 on Scott Kolar.  http://www.skgrips.com/6412.html

Also Blu Magnum comes highly recommended.

I would suggest Gary Reeder. He shows a small frame (97) with Stag grips custom fitted to their "gunfighter" grip frame. Similar to FA's own round butt option. Since Reeder does complete caliber conversions and full customs he may be able to point you in the right direction regarding the best type of grip material that would hold up against heavy recoil. Note: I don't have personal experience with his shop but have considered sending in some of my guns to him for custom work.

By all means get that 4 3/4" .50AE FG tricked out, so you can send it to me for a mere pittance.  ;D ;D

I would contact Raj at Eagle Grips.  He has genuine Indian Sambar Stag and the fit is as perfect as that of the gun itself.

Here is a link to Eagle Grips page showing my 83 in 475 LB and it's little brother a 97 in 45 Colt

He also offers real ivory, buffalo horn, simulated ivory, elk and several other nice options.

Be careful with Eagle Grips.  I had a set of Elk Stag fitted to my 500WE and after waiting 3 times the promised delivery time the gun was delivered with scratches on the frame and the grips were of poor quality and very blocky in cross section.  I tried to like them but finally contacted Eagle about the grips and they claimed they could not find that I ever ordered them.  After some discussion they located my file.  By that time there was no way I was trusting them with my gun or money.  I took the grip off with the intent of putting them on E-bay but just couldn't put them on someone else, so, they reside in a drawer.  Everything worked out great though as I sent the WE to Roy Fishpaw and he expertly fitted a nice set from english walnut.

I have seen good work from Scott Kolar and Ted Admonovitch (sp?) too, but have had bad luck with John Galligher in Jasper, Alabama...but that's another story.  I think Sack Peterson may be worth a try too.

Good Luck...
