Now those of you who think I am back, don't go getting all depressed...I am working the grain harvest and we took a day and half to allow the barley to ripen a bit more.  Those of you who drink Coors beer, you are welcome and thank very much for your patronage. Friday evening it's back to the fields...Since I have absolutely no experience in this field, I am the inexperienced teenager that gets to fetch and carry and do odd jobs.  They let me drive the combine the other day. I didn't break anything and made a dog leg swath--you know a swath that when you looked back up it, it looks like a dogs hind leg...

Now how can this be on topic, simple.  With the money they pay me I am going to buy powder for my cannon.

Good to hear that you've not lost fingers, toes or anything else!

It's on-topic as it is administrative.  Did you find any cannon balls out there?

Rumor has it that several bowling balls were found on the site of our cannon shoot earlier this month, but where I am working is about 50 miles over our left shoulder...winds can get a bit strong up here, but not that strong.

So did they give them back to you?   ;D

Since I have absolutely no experience in this field, I am the inexperienced teenager that gets to fetch and carry and do odd jobs.  They let me drive the combine the other day.

Sounds like fun. I work part time at the docks occasionally. Never had any proir experience with heavy equipment except with a Tonka truck.

One time a guy says "We're gonna take off the hatch covers."

 "Huh?"

"LOL. Watch me do one first. It's easy. Just use your hand signals to help the crane operator stack them."

 "Uhhhh... Okay."

I took a pic with my cell phone...

When the crane sets them down, the dock shakes and you can hear it a mile away............. Kinda like a pre-1899 black powder cannon.

I think what you're doing could actually be called "a noble calling." You've got to have the ingredients to brew the golden ale!
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Gary,

I never let you in the gun room did I?  Good move Douglas!

Preseason scouting activities...like harvesting grain gets me out to find an area where the dear hang out.  Come season I go in those areas on foot and walk the weed lines-spot and stalk.   I like to get in the middle of the big fields. The road hunters drive around the outside and I kill deer in the middle.

So this grain harvesting serves to provide money to buy powder for my cannons and venison to eat.

not in the gun room ? doug you showed us every gun in your collection for an hour or so . nice old martinis , garand , some very acurate 17s and lots of fancy .22s

so you go into the middle of a field that is being shot into from any random direction at any random time ?

no wonder you dont smile when you poise for pics . you s/b a happy clam ! thats a nice deer to eat .

you still got your war face on . ;D grrrrraarrrr .

the reason i ask is because i had a good friend who was tired of still hunting during bp season, and by dumb luck he saw a deer while in his cj 5 . so he shoots it dead with his .54cal renegade out of the window , and then he told me

.." well for a second i thought about walking up on it like davey crockett ,then reconsidered 'aw hell i'll just drive to it ."

but he did eat deer that year .

I made a choice last fall go have my knee replaced or go deer hunting...you wouldn't have been smiling either....

You saw a few token clunker Martini's and beater Garand...you didn't see the treasures.

oooohhh that will make a lot of very delishious sausages
but you need to build a good smoker now
send richard the butcher a pm and ask for some recipies on sausages
or search back here at the forum, me and richard had a sausage recepie discussion a year back or so
hope you saved the intestine, you will need it for the sausage making ;D
I can promise that you could make 10 lbs of extremely tasty and high quality sausage from each deer,

Is it more accurate than that Scottish projectile discussed a few weeks back?

I make neither sausage or jerky from venison.  Steaks, roasts, chops, and stew meat only.  Venison is to high quality for that.

he he he , yeah it sure is
its nothing strange in it , just liver, lung, kidney, heart, tongue, fat, all small pieces of meat that you can scrape from the bones and skull , onion, whole barley grains
all that should be boiled and then ground roughly (dont ground the barley)
add salt and spices, mix it and stuff it in the really well cleaned and salted intestine
then smoke it for 12 hours at approximately 80 degrees celsius

when you should eat them you fry them in a little butter.
eat them with boiled potatoes and pickled beetroot

YUMMY  MMMMM

sorry forgot to tell that the onions should of course not be boiled , just ground with all the other stuff except the barley

Forget it Dan. You're talking to "butt in the butter tubbers", who were never rationed and were raised in the land of plenty, on milk & honey. They don't know the wonders of haggis and sausage.

I once published an article on sausage making in a British magazine (paid me well) and  it only had one criticism. It came from a clown in South Africa who was vocal about my using pork butt for sausage and said it was a waste.

I wrote back and said it would be a waste if you wore it around your neck but not if you put it in your stomach.

My 80 lb. American Staffordshire Terrier (BIG Pit Bull), wolfed down 4&1/2 lbs of venison & wine sausage in less than the 2&1/2 minutes it took me to retrieve my cup of tea.

I had just made and hung 80 lbs of 6 varieties and she only wacked the venison.

How does my black powder cannon fit into this?  I touch it off on opening day to get the goats (deer?) moving.
