Good luck on your hunt.  I hope everything goes well.  I was expecting you to take some custom hand cannon and hunt from the ground.  I hope the bow hunt works well for you.

Here is my report on my hunt up in Maine. My first day of hunting started on Monday the 31st. I got to stand about 1:45 PM I was given details about some of the bear coming to the sight and was all set up and ready to go.

Very quit and nice day, around 65 degrees. As the day went on nothing happened at all, at 5:07 PM I see a set of black ears moving from way behind the bait site. I turn my video camera on and push the record button. I am looking through the 8 inch hole in the blind cloth, I watch the bear moving around very cautiously behind the bait site.  After about 5 minutes, I look at the video camera and notice it was in the standby mode, I had not recorded anything, I must not of pushed the record button hard enough.

I now push the record button once again, and this time make sure it is recording. The bear is still behind the bait reluctant to come in. I pick up my bow and get ready for the bear. After about 2 minutes the bear comes around the bait and sneaks in as takes a meat scrap, and walks back in the woods on the left side of the bait sight.

A few moments later he returns to the bait and I come to full draw. As the bear is standing there slightly quartering away I decide to release the arrow, at the time I released the arrow the bear turns and the arrow hits the bear far back. I thought it was a good shot, and I waited in the blind and listened to here the direction the bear went. I did not hear a death moan. I sat back and replayed the video and I watched it in slow motion, that is when I discovered the bear was hit far back. It takes only one second on the video to hear the release of the arrow until the bear is off the screen. It happened so fast. That bear was well over 300 lb.

I called in the outfitter and we did a search of the area for blood, none was found, we search the area and trails for any sign and nothing was found. We searched for over 2 hours and decided to move back and come back the next day to check it out in the daylight. We searched for another 3 hours the next day with 5 people in a grid search and came up empty handed. I was sick to my stomach, I had made a bad shot on the bear and felt terrible. I did not hunt that night. As a matter of fact, I was contemplating not hunting any more on this trip. I was disappointed in the shot I had made.

On Wednesday Pete the guide and one of his helpers came to my cabin, and we had a discussion and they convinced me to hunt that night. I was put into a different area. I sat in the blind and the thought of that shot haunted me all day. At 6:15 PM I seen a bear coming into the bait. I turned on the video and started recording. The bear once again came in very cautious, and came around the bait from the right side. The bear knew something was not right and only offered me a straight on shot, I did not even think about shooing this bear with such a shot. I thought the bear would settle down and start eating, but the bear just turned away and walked off, never to return that night. It was a very large 400 lb plus sow. I had the whole thing on video. I showed Pete and the others in camp and they all said that was a huge bear.

Well I spoke with Pete and told him I had lost all confidence in my bow, and I doubted I would hunt with a bow again. Not because I am a bad shot, but more I did not have the patient to wait for the perfect shot. Once again the next day Pete showed up and we talked about the first day hunt and to try to get it out of my head. So that night the Marlin 45-70 went with me to the blind and I decided I needed to get my head back into the game.

At 6:16 PM I see movement from the same direction I had seen the night before. I turn on the video camera and start filming, I get the gun on the shooting stick and wait for the bear to come into the sight. As the bear steps out, I am thinking it is the same big bear that came out the night before and I hold the sights on an open area and wait for the bear to clear the log pile. As soon as I see the bear clear the log pile, I find the shoulder and I pull the trigger, the bear rolls up and flaps around and lands lest than 5 years form the bait sight. I wait and watch the bear and he lets out the death moan 5 times. I wait about 2 minutes and start to walked over to the downed bear. When I get to it, it was not the big bear I had seen the night before, it was a smaller bear. I called Pete on the radio and told him I had a bear down. We took some pictures and loaded up the bear and went to get the other hunters out of the woods. We checked in the bear and weighted the bear, a whopping 130 Lb.

Am I disappointed in the size of the bear, sure I am. But I had 2 opportunities at a 300 plus and a 400 plus.
But I learned a big lesson on this bear hunt. If you are going to bear hunt with a bow, you better be able to wait for the perfect shot, don't try to force a shot on make a shot happen.

Once again I am very happy with the work Pete Koch of Wild country outfitters did. I have booked once again with him for next year.

I also met Steve AKA six_gunz  and his son little Steve, great guys.

I am waiting for the Outfitter to send me Pictures, I only have the video of my hunt.

I completely understand the gut wrenching feeling of a wounded bear.  I'm glad to hear it worked out for you in the end.

Sounds to me like you found a first rate outfitter with great results.  I may look into them for next year.  I keep hoping that since there won't be as many people taking hunting trips this year that there will be many more bears and even bigger bears next year.

Alex,
It was great meeting and hunting with you, your friend Jerry, his wife Sandy....and the two texans too!

I never did get to see your video, but my son said he did and agrees that it was a big bear.
I can relate on what you said about being patient while bowhunting and having to wait for that perfect shot. I drew back on my bear at least 4 times before it finally offered me a broadside shot.
Good luck next year on that big one!

How many bear tags do you get in Maine? If the license allows just one bear, the second one was poached IMO.

I didn't want to be the first one to jump on this when I read that nonsense last night, but seriously?!?!?!?  Poaching?!?!?!?!  Where I come from if you wound an animal and it runs off and you don't recover it, it doesn't mean that you just rip up your tag.  It absolutely sucks to wound an animal, but if you don't recover it the best you can hope for is that the animal will recover and be stronger than ever.  The idea of calling that poaching is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on the internet.  I wish I could hand you a blue ribbon for that comment.

I presume you haven't hunting in different places/ countries. You go sheep hunting and kill a Ram and it falls down some nasty cliff and can't be recovered,do you think the outfitter lets you shoot another? Putting an arrow into the guts of an animal means a dead animal whether you find it or not. Perhaps "poached" isn't the right word, but illegal is.

You presume too much, probably because you don't know what you're talking about.

So far I've hunted in; Indiana(several seasons), Wisconsin(once), Michigan (two seasons), Maine (once), Ontario (two seasons).  Not the biggest list in the world, but I'm hoping it gets a little bigger every year.

WTH are we talking about ram hunting for?  In the case you're talking about any guide worth hiring would have said don't take the shot if the animal can't be recovered.

Show me in the Maine hunting regs where it'd be illegal?

I don't blaim you for having an opinion on this, but geesh.  Can't a guy post a hunting report on this forum anymore without some genious ripping on him because he made a bad shot?

Redhawk1,
Man I'm sorry about all this.  Every year you go bear hunting and write up a nice report that I personally enjoy reading.  Then every year somebody comes in and ruins the topic.  I'm giving your guide some serious thought and hopefully the economy will better next year and I'll see you all there also.  Then I can write up a report and have somebody bash it too.

+1 Teddy,
I didn't like what I read last night, but bit my tongue!!

BBF,
If it wasn't legal then Pete, the outfitter, wouldn't have let Redhawk1 hunt another night.
He followed the law to a T and that 1st bear was a survivor! They searched for hours that night and came back and did a complete grid search the next day for 5-6hrs more before giving up. No dead bear!!!

I think BBF poorly presented his argument.  There are indeed places where a bad stick will end your hunt.  On my spring bowhunt I saw that happen.  The policy is second bear $750 and wounding counts.  Everyone knows it up front.  One night a guy made a bad stick on 2 different bears.  It was a long story but I feel confident saying no one was surprised at what this guy did.  The next morning they were able to find one.  He then owes $750.00 and is done.

I believe the practice is common in Africa.  I've read stories with the same result on elk hunts.  If I were running a serious trophy operation I'd consider the policy too.  I'd want to protect a very limited resource.  If you were more a numbers operation I don't think it would matter as much and probably wouldn't offset the lost business from angry clients.

I don't think it would be considered poaching in any state or province.  You have a duty to retrieve and I'm sure he made a good faith effort to look for his bear.  Legally I don't think he did anything wrong.

Redhawk1,

Well, a bit of tough luck, but overall a decent hunt (I know you'd rather have taken the 300 or 400 pounder, but hey...). Lots of good lessons for all of us to be learned from your experience. Thanks for sharing the not so good points as well as the very good.

BBF  you are indeed entitled to you opinion, no matter how wrong it is.

There was not laws broken, nor was this poaching. I am an honorable man, and follow the law when hunting and know the laws where I will be hunting. Had I hunted with an outfitter that said I was done or expected to pay an extra charge, I would of accepted that. No one knows how much it hurt me to know I made a bad shot on an animal. But I guess you have NEVER lost an animal?

I was told a story about the price tags people put on big game. I am not talking an actual price, but a type of value. But they only count big game for there worth.

How many hunters have made bad shots on Ducks, Geese, Squirrels, dove, rabbits and such? But they just over look it because they were not big game like Deer, Bear, Moose and so on. There is a lot of guys that over look this but not me. I take pride in my shooting and making the most ethical shot on game. Some times stuff happens, and if you were not there, you don't know what actually transpired.

I could of lied about the whole thing to my Outfitter and deleted the video, but I owed it to that animal to make my best effort to recover the animal and well I am just not that kind of man.  I feel 6 to 7 hours with 5 people looking over a mile stretch of land is a great effort. I don't take pride in the shot I took, but to sit in your chair and judge someone is uncalled for.

Just pray you never make a bad shot, it is a hard thing to live with if you are truly a hunter, and not a killer.
If you ever shot one of the smaller game I mentioned above, and did not recover it? If so then you my friend have no room to judge my actions.

Thanks to those of you that understand what happened. I posted this report for others to know about my hunt, and maybe learn from my mistake.  I knew there was going to be someone that is the "perfect" hunter that was going to come along, and give there opinion, and slam me for my actions. I am glad BBF is that "perfect" hunter.

There is some reason and logic to BBF mentioned. In some places if you shoot but do not find an animal it must be counted as part of your bag toward whatever the bag limit is. I'm pretty sure that is the case here in Bama and for sure is with migratory birds. If you shoot and drop a dove but do not recover it that dove is still counted against your limit and if a warden is watching you'll find that out the hard way if you go over the limit counting it.

Still the laws vary area to area and all that matters is what the law was in Maine at the time. That I have no clue about but have to assume that since the guide/outfitter said to continue the hunt that it is not the case there. He is the one rather than the hunter who should be most aware of the rules in that regard.

Whether to end a hunt due to such an event or to continue it and try to take another is a matter of personal ethics each person must wrestle with. It isn't for us to say if it's right or wrong based on our own personal code of ethics so long as it's within the rule of law.

Graybeard I understand about other hunting areas, and I study the game laws and understand the land owners and outfitters rules.

In the State of Maine here is the rule about bear, "It is unlawful to hunt bear after having killed and registered one during the open season of that calendar year."

My bear was not recovered or registered.

Had my outfitter told me I was done hunting, I would of lived with his decision. Therefor I don't think this discussion needs to go any further here.

No laws were broken, and I don't feel I was unethical in my action to continue to hunt.
