Ruger No. 1 tackdriver?
« on: August 27, 2009, 07:06:46 PM »
Found that my Medium Sporter in 7mm Rem Mag with Weaver fixed 4x scope was a little heavy to tote around the Wisconsin woods for whitetail so I bought an Encore barrel in 7-08. Not wanting the Ruger to turn into a safe queen I thought I would download it and shoot paper. After a little load experimentation I tried 58 grains of IMR4350 in neck sized brass with the Sierra 130 HPBT MatchKing and standard Winchester primers. The bullet was seated .005 into the lands. The rifle gave me a three round group of .126". What gives? This aint no varmint rifle! It has a two piece stock! The forearm attachment isnt tuned! While the rifle made my arms ache in the woods, it sits real nice on sandbags! ;D

Is this a fluke or do you consistantly get groups like that? How many shots per group?

My groups are 3 shots. The Match King load IS consistent (magnum primers open up groups to.5"). 160 Gamekings average 1.5". While I have just started to work with this rifle at the range its good to know there is this type of potential.

Hey there 4296,

As per heavy rifles, and problems carring, been there and done that!

In fact, gave my last #1 to a son because I was having carry problems.

But then -----------------

I get turned on to the Boonie Packer sling which was made in Salem, Oregon.

I think Cabela's list it under a different name, but the sling takes all the pain out of rifle carry and makes shots very quick!!!!!!!!!!!!.

The sling is an across chest carry, like a military carry, and works great.

I am back to carring a full sized rifle again, and have been since the Boonie Packer was first tried.

Fact is, I'm eye'in another #1, this time in 45/70.

Gett'in older, the arms and shoulders just don't handle the weight, so this sling was my answer.

Keep em coming

As per the great groups, I have not had many of the "one hole groups from my #1s, but each and every one was a GOOD shooter.

My son now has two of those rifles and both shoot very well.

I did, over the years, develop a way to float the forearm, so barrel pressure was never an issue.  But, I had good shooters both before and after that point. I just happen to like my hunting rifles floated.

Keep em coming!

I don't think it's fluke at all.  I have #1 sporter in 45/70 and use 350gr speers and can make 1" groups at 100yards more consistantly than with some of my bolt guns.  I'm pleasently surprised to say the least.

I have a .243 Ackley Improved in a #1 that I can easily shoot quarter sized groups with and if I try real hard I can get em inside a dime.

I did fully float the barrel from the forearm and I have to bump the shoulder back a tad with a sizer to get the headspace where it should be.  Like you I load it right out to the lands.  85 grain Nosler Partitions over 45 grains of reloader 19.

#1s are like some other things, "you pays your money and you takes your chances"  I've had 22/250, 7 mag, 300 mag and a couple of others that wouldn't shoot no matter what I tried but on the other hand I have a 6mm, .375 H&H and a 45/70 that shoot great.  The 6mm is box stock and shoots under 1/2" consistently.  It's all in the barrel/forend relationship.

Morn'in HO8,

You are very likely correct with your comment about "------barrel/forend relationship."

This why I bed and float the forends on any #1s I may be lucky enough to have pass through my hands.

Once done, the barrel/forend relationship is a non-issue as there is no longer the potential for group robing pressure once the forend is properly floated and glas bedded.

And speaking of glas bedding, WOW!!!!!!! has the cost for Brownell's Acraglas ever gone up.

The kits are not available in my local towns, so I went on line to check the price for the product directly from Brownell.

$25 bucks + S&H.  Long gone are the days for the kits at under the 10 dollar figure.

This wouldn't be a big thing if I only used the resin to bed the occasional firearm, but the product is so very good it has become my go to produce for many repairs.

I happened to make one of my rare trips through Spokane, Wash. a couple days ago and stopped at the White Elephant to check price and availability.

Well 20 bucks a kit ain't good (picked up 3), but better then 25, so guess I'll just have to "suck it up" and pay the price until I find something as good and cheaper.

Keep em coming!

I've been using Grey Marine Tex for years and like it better then Acraglas.

But then that means I haven't used the Brownell's stuff for years...  :-\  They may have improved it... Or I may have forgotten how good it was... or why I thought GMT was better...  :-[  Nevermind... use what you want... Marine Tex is cheaper though... a lot... well at least it was... I haven't bought any in a while... I used the last of what I had last week... need to buy some more... I hope it's still a lot cheaper then Acraglas... probably not... the cost everything is going up... even in this economy... Obama's just making bad things worse... I never could figure out why democrats think you can spend your way out of debt... completely illogical... just like most wimmins... they think the same way... Wimmins love to spend money... even if they don't know what they spending it on... don't leave us poor men folk any funds for our toys... all we can do is sit around watching tube... enough to drive a man crazy or to drink...

This depresses me just thinking about it!  I need to go home and start the weekend early.   :-\   I think I'll call Kathie first and send her out shopping for the best "action bedding product," that is afordable and hasn't been banned by Obama!  That way I can sit around the house, watch TV and drink beer in peace...  ;D  'course I'll be in debt for the rest of my life by the time she finishes...  :'(

Hey there AtlLaw,

Is the Gray Marine Tex a liquid or more of a paste/jelly like the one Afraglas product which I don't like and don't use?

I like the liquid type, for even though it is messy and you need to have your ducks in a row before using it, it just works very well both with and without the glass fibers.

I use much of it as a very good glue for repairs and it always leaves the item stronger then new.

I have not heard about the GMT, but will check the net and see if I can find out about it.

Keep em coming!

It's a 2 part epoxy you mix together.  Similar to but probably not as easy to mix as acraglas gel.  Most any boat dealership/marine supply should carry it.  I was serious when I said I've used it exclusively for years.  I've never been disappointed.   ;D

Having done Fiberglass repair professionaly, I hated Marien Tex.  the stuff sands like Iron!  And I hated it when my boss would take jobs where the owner tried to fix it himself with helpful advise from the guys at the boat store.
Did I mention I was the Sandman of the crew.
But for small repairs it works great.
I tend to use the WEST system epoxy of I need Epoxy.  but it is expensive and you have to watch your humidity.  Hot humid day and you are lucky to get it mixed efore it cooks off.

Thanks guys,

I think I am getting the picture and if so, the Gray marine Tex must be a gel or paste type epoxy when mixed.

If so, that puts it out of my use as the one time I use Acraglas "Gel" I didn't like it and went back to the liquid.

Yes, the gel may be easier to use but it doesn't get the results I desire and is not usable as a glue for repairs such as rebuilding a damaged stock, piece of furnature, installing ebony forends and grip caps etc.

AS I indicated, you must have your ducks in a row when using the liquid epoxy, but I learned my lessons back about 40 years ago and for many years have enjoyed the high quality results of the liquid Acraglas products, inspite of the potentially messy side of the liquid.

Keep em coming!
