7'6" RATTLESNAKE
« on: August 28, 2009, 04:00:11 AM »
Elgin, Texas.
Local PD killed a  large Rattlesnake in a residential yard where four children were playing.
Inside the snake was a freshly eaten mature jackrabbit.
I have seen the pics and it is true.
ER's in the area have repored a large increase in snakebits  recently.

Must have been a pretty thick snake. A jack rabbit is quite a morsel for a snake that size. I usually think of them as rat eaters until they get quite a bit larger than that.

(There are some pretty big pythons living in Florida these days, like 25 feet and 300 pounds confirmed

Well, it was no rattlesnake, but just a couple days ago here in Oregon, a fellow went out to his garage to take out his trash, and there was a 7' python in his garage. Oregon police responded, and found out it belonged to a neighbor 4 doors down. We have a few garter snakes and fox snakes in the area, but usually not any pythons. Good thing it wasn't in my garage/barn, probably be missing a head. gypsyman

That is about as big as they get. And a lot of snake.

Ross Allen of Florida fame, offered a reward years ago for anyone who could bring in a 8' eastern diamondback. I don't believe anyone ever collected that reward.

Growning up in Florida, I remember pictures in the newspapper of 6-7' diamondbacks. I killed one in new mexico that was close to 7'. I had no tape measure but 6" or so hung off each side of the tailgate of a full size pickup. And that was without the head.

I'd probably be missing the back end of the garage and having the SWAT team over for a brief chat about the firefight that the neighbors heard.  ;)

A few years ago I killed one just Southwest of Abilene, Tx that went almost 7'.  I still laugh about it today, I had taken two young school teachers out to look at some land I was leasing for deer hunting.  When I got out of my truck I reached into the pocket on the door panel and pulled out a little .357 pistol and stuck it in my back pocket.  One of the guys asked why I was taking it, I said, "just in case."  We had walked over the lease and was about 25-30 feet from the trucks walking in a trail where trucks had beat the grass down when I noticed the snake.  I knew immediately that it was a big one, whipped the little pistol out and popped off two rounds.  One of the fellows asked, "what the heck you shooting at ole man?"  I pointed to the snake, he almost messed his pants.  One of them walked on up to where the truck was parked and picked up a long cedar fence stay and brought it back, hefted the snake up and carried it up to where the trucks were parked. It covered the bed and tail gate of a Toyota Pickup which I was told was 7'.

What was funny about it, after the guys inspected the snake one of them made a comment, "you hit em in the head both times you shot."  I never told them I was shooting my handloaded shot shells in the gun.  If you ran across them today they would likely tell you about the ole man's shooting ability.

I passed on the e-mail too myronman and gypsyman--they had their e-mail address on their profile--I hope they can post it too the thread.
I have killed some big D-backs and Timber rattlers but this one has/had some good genes.
The rabbit picture was the most telling.

In San Antonio Florida there is a rattlesnake rodeo.  I have seen the picture of a rattler being held by I believe 6 men shoulder to shoulder.  The picture has a small boy sitting by them.  My friend knew the boy when he was an older man.  The snake was found in a barn.

I don't venture to guess the lenght.  I also saw a picture of a snake in Wauchula which had a weight that I believe was around 100 lbs.

I know this will spark controversy, but I have seen pictures of both snakes.

I have personally measured a coral snake in Pasco County at 48".  My buddy killed it with his bow while hunting.  It draped across the hood of a Suzuki Samari.

These are older snakes away from population, which allows them to grow and age.

now it has been a while since i have been in an area with coral snakes, but what you are talking about sounds more to me like a king snake.

The record is 47.5 inches.

I am suspect about the picture but wanted to share it.  I know this country is noted for large numbers of snakes, and I have personally killed one that went near six feet.  Check the picture out.........

In one of the old Foxfire books, there was a picture of a rattler killed in Geogia in the early 1900's . They had it tied to a long pole in order to get it up to full length. That thing was huge!

I don't doubt that it is around Odessa. Just looks like that country. I think the snake has been "enhanced". I have lived fairly close to Odessa all my life and never saw or even heard of a rattlesnake that large. Four and five footers were pretty common and I personally killed one that was a little over six feet long when I was still in high school. I haven't even seen a rattlesnake in ten or twelve years.
