Which Caliber and length?
« on: August 28, 2009, 12:34:29 PM »
I have the Encore 15" 30-06, which is a wee bit on the recoilish side, if you know what I mean. Was thinking of a 500 S&W in about a 10" barrel. Will this have less recoil or what caliber would be a good choice for Whitetail at under a 100 yds. The 15" barrel is a bit longer than I like. Would like to stay in the 12" to 10" range.

If you think that the '06 recoils "a wee bit" - don't even think about the .500 in a 10" tube.  That is far more than needed for 100 yard whitetail anyway, although it will certainly work well.  For a 10" barrel try a .44 Mag.  Plenty of power, moderate recoil compared to the other two, and ammo will be cheaper and easier to find.

You might also consider a 10" 45lc barrel: not the combo 410/45, but a true 45lc barrel.  I've taken whitetail out to 60 yds with a Blackhawk with 5 1/2" in 45lc.  The 10" Contender ought to up that to at least 100yds.

  • You mean this isn't the road to the shooting range

On another forum, it was graphically proven that a 44 magnum would go completely through a buck from shoulder to hip! He skinned it and took photos.  The 30-30 is extremely huntable, as are the 7-30 Waters. The 30-30 is tamer in the 14" version than the others. Not so likely to sting your hand.

I once had a 10 inch 30-30 barrel that was magna-ported, it recoiled like a 357 mag.  Really was a nice barrel for deer.  Had to sell it when I went overseas.  Worth considering.

I have a super 14" in 444 Marlin.  It is as accurate as I am.  The recoil is not unpleasant, and ammo can be acquired anyplace.
