I have used both, and also look forward to using the excellent Lyman Devastator Hp.  I have pretty much settled on thre bullets for all my self defense/ hunting needs.  Primarily, the Devastator.  I penetrates enough in testing, is very accurate, and makews a hole you wouldn't believe. Second, a 250 grain Keith.  Ditto, except the 250 is non gas check..  I use it a lot for self defense training.  third the lee 310 grain flat point.  very accurate, massive penetrationand damage.  These three are pretty much interchangable, although i wouldn't want to use the 310 grain in a gun battle around bystanders, in a pinch, it would put a bad guy DOWN.

I have only ever reloaded jacketed bullets, Main reason was i was told that the heavier loads that i used would lead my barrels so that and the fact that i was not interested in melting and / or swaging my own has my experience limited to jacketed. Now that is not written in stone and i may have to reconsider in the future, Jacketed hp and sp bullets have always done quite well for me. so if i change it would be for monetary expedience.

I have to agree with jacketed bullets. I tried some cast lead bullets in my encore .45 acp. using .45 super data and it leaded up pretty bad. I think if you kept it below 1000 fps you may be fine, i don't know. I shot deer once using 240gr. swc in my .44 mag. and was not impressed to say the least. I had to shoot him a few times. Although the first shot would have killed him if i would have given him some time. One thing about cast is you don't have to worry about getting a pass though because they do that!!!!

For me nothing but hard cast. If I could not use cast, I would use Barnes bullets. Barnes sent me some of there new bullets the Barnes Busters in 50 cal. I shot some the other day and I have to say, the accuracy was great. Now I have to get them out and kill something with them, but knowing Barnes bullets, I am more than sure they will perform great. I have to get a write up done and submitted to Graybeard.

I will begin to cast .45 in 250 gr flat nose in the next week, for my ruger blackhawk. I have shot several whitetails over the years, with the .44 mag but only with factorys or with xtp reloads.  I might be tempted to use hard cast with it as well when I run out of the current stock.  I bought a box of the  .45 reverlutions but have not touched one off yet.  have only shot the cowboy rounds through it so far.  jim :)

In .45 Colt I usually use cast that my friend and I make from wheel weights.  I have shot the leverlution and find the 235 grn bullet shoots acurate but about a 1/2 inch down from by usual sight setting.  For the cost I beleave I will stay with cast or load 300 grh Hornady XTP's. 8)

Well, good question.

In my handguns I can do all that I want with cast. I shoot a 357, and my working load is the lee 158gr SWC PB, cast out of AC WW, sized .360 and lubed with speedgreen. I shoot it over 15gr of Steel. Shooting into wood, it makes PERFECT mushrooms, and when shot into sand, it turns inside out.

I do shoot jacketed, but I don't but them, for the most part. If I can get the cheap or free then I might load some up to keep on hand.

Now my 7mm/08 in another story...........

For some of you that are experiencing leading from cast bullets you might want to consider a gas checked bullet if you're gonna push them that fast.

I really don`t understand the problem.

I have lot of guns in different calibers.

A friend of mine - cast the bullets.

And use wheelweights.
Sometimes he do the hardness in water.

Both types - shoot through a deer (and bigger species).

Or use a better lube. I push PB boolits in my 357  about 1350  FPS (158gr - 6") with no leading and excellent accuracy, using Speed Green lube.

I use cast only. Unless one lives in a "lead-free" zone I do not understand why one would choose and spend the additional $$ on the new Barnes Buster over a a hard cast WFN/LFN/WLN.

Those of you that are claiming $ savings , what type of cast are ya using?  I've found no significant $ saivings tween quality cast and jacketed (Nosler bulk handgun H.P.s)  I tried using cheap hardcast....massive leading.

I just recently inquired on booking a hog hunt.  Told them I planned on using a handgun, that was fine with them.  However, I was told:  " no need to go heavy hard cast, a quality jacketed will work fine."  When I told him I usually load with 296 and 240 grain XTPs , he said that was great.  Guess he ought to know.

regards , irold
