Cougar in Omaha
« on: October 02, 2003, 02:55:01 PM »
CNN and local news stated a 80lbs cougar was caught in Omaha,NE Old Mill area at 114 th and Dodge for those that are familar. This no pet that got loose (80lbs). There have been numerious sightings to the state of cougars which were blown off as the affected agencies believed these to be Bobcats or large dogs. There is a lot of deer hunters in the area now and could have forced the move to the city.

I have two brothers that have cabins on the Platt river and they have been telling for a couple of years about the cats return. Here in central Iowa and west they have had seeral sightings and at least one road kill. The DNR is not taking this seriously but a real cold winter comes and a rual farm kid doesn't come back from school its a little to late then. I will be driving the roads this winter glassing for coyotes and the "kitty"

Just caught the end of the news a mountain lion was spotted in the same area that the last one was captured. 114th and Dodge or Old Mill area. Have to check the late news for an update. The last one was in the 80lbs range.

I live in NE Kansas, around falls city,  I grew up in Nevada and I know what a cougar looks like.  I saw tracks numerous times starting about 4yr. ago, and then saw one crossing the road, close enough for no doubt.  Told local game warden, he scoffed and said no way.  since then there have been numerous siteings and some one shot one.
There is also a couple of Moose here.  I know, hard to believe, but it was photgraphed and put in the local paper,
The cats go where the deer are.  when deer populations go up, that is where they will be.
