SPAM?
« on: August 29, 2009, 03:21:10 AM »
I was at the state fair yesterday and SPAM, the mystery meat people, had an entire building showcasing their wares. I tried it once over 20 years ago and hated it because it was so overpoweringly salty and greasy. Since then my tastes have changed to like salt and grease even less.

Does SPAM fit into your diet? Or do you know some application for it that makes it, in some way, a delicacy? As with many meats, I suspect I am not properly understanding it because of some trick that's required in preparation. It's popularity has been long, and sales are very strong for this product, so it must be appealing for a reason.

I love it! Pretty handi for everything. Goes good with mac and cheese. When I contracted a Job in Minnesota, I got wiped out by rain, and went to Cabelas' on I-35 and made a trip to the Spam museum in Austin. It was way cool, and they treated me extremely well, especially when they found out I was from Arizona. They gave me a bunch of momentoes and a box of spam to take home. I also took a trip to Red Wing to take my boots to the red wing factory for repair and they fixed both pairs while I waited for free. I spent 8 months there working on a construction project, and have nothing but fond memoriesHopefully I can vacation there someday. I also got a taste for Grain belt beer , but that is another story.

Growing up I did not like it, my Dad would cook it for breakfast sometimes.  But after I left home I never gave it much thought.  My wife does not like it, so it never came into our house.

Over the years hunting buddies would bring it to camp and I would sometimes eat some since the cans held more than one serving.  I soon started putting a can in my hunting food box.  Especially when they came out with the smaller cans.

A few years ago while shopping for a hunting trip, I found the little foil pouches containing one slice.  Now they are a reguler in my food box.

I fry them for breakfast, eat them on a sandwich, chop them up and cook with veggies, or just chop it up and heat it with a can of pork N Beans.

My son loves it, the wife won't stay in the kitchen when we are fixing Spam, she says the smell is enough to make her sick.  Don't know what she is talking about, we like it.

I love it, I mostly eat it as cold cut on a sandwich with cheese and miricle whip but scrambled up in eggs or diced up in mac and cheese is pretty good too.

I'd eat it if I was starving, but then, I'd probably cook Quester up (if he was available) ;) and eat him too ;D if starving to death was the case. But until then, they can keep their SPAM.

Spam and eggs makes my mouth water. Chunked up and cooked in baked beans is great also.

You better betcha SPAM is good food. Makes great sandwiches and works as a meal when substituted for ham in most any application you'd use ham for. I often eat it with pork and beans or tomatoes as a side dish with it as the meat part of the meal. We have a huge supply of it on hand at all times. In a SHTF or IOWAWKI today situation it will carry us thru for some while for protein along with the beans and rice we have stock piled.

SPAM, a timely subject.  This morning was one of those I could not make myself sleep in.  I have been a good boy lately and my breakfast has consisted of a cut peach in a bowl of shredded wheat, and a few cups of coffee.  But this morning I was bad, when I went for the milk I spotted a small plate with SPAM on it, and next to it was some small baked potatoes leftover from last night’s dinner.  I chopped up an onion and tossed it all in a frying pan.  I cooked it until it was brown, and then added some cheddar cheese to it.  I fried up a couple of large eggs to go with it.  My sin for the week.
That filled up a plate and then with a Picante Sauce topping and a few mugs of coffee I was ready at daylight to pull the bicycle out and go for a ride this morning.  I did not run out of steam going up the hills.  Okay, I had to walk the bike up one hill.
A lot of times I will add a tomatoes, and mushrooms to it.

Many years ago a hunting partner told me he did not want to try the mix for breakfast under a tarp shelter cooking and eating area.  He made it clear he did not like SPAM.  I told him that was okay and he could have cold cereal for breakfast.  He decided to have some on his plate because he wanted potatoes and eggs.  Now days he is first in line, another convert.

At home I try and leave some for the wife; she likes her fried SPAM sandwiches.

My wife does not care for Grits but I was raised on them.  Grits SPAM, and eggs make for a good breakfast.   Once I had weakened this morning if those potatoes did not require consumption, I would have been into the Grits.  One time I asked a waitress at a restaurant near or around Waycross if they served real or instant Grits.  She said they served, True Grits.

SPAM has gotten a little pricy but it is handy, it keeps, and it taste good.

I have a closet full of it, along with dried beans and rice.  Nothing in Spam thats not in a hot dog or in chicken nuggets.  It goes with me in my hunting pack in case I get lost or hurt.

It's always kept our troops going,so whats not to like. Now it even comes in a variety of flavors. Our hunting camp is never without it. No refrigeration needed.A little imagination and a can of spam, you can make a good dinner out of most anyting.

A steady companion on camping trips as a boy. My wife  said she didn't like it but during one of the power outages she decided fried spam was pretty darned good. We compared the kroger brand, walmart brand, and regular spam and noticed no difference, except the price. TREAT??? Now,that may look like spam, but it's not, don't really care for it. We try to keep several cans in the closet for emergencies. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I wouldn't mind SPAM so much if it weren't so darn greasy and have such a weird taste to it. And I'm not trying to sound finicky, but the texture of it when chewing it is just not right. Plus, like Sourdough mentioned about his wife, I too can not seem to come to grips with the smell of it.

Obviously, some of you folks really like it and that's cool. There must be many others who also consume and enjoy it - it's been selling well on the market for an eternity. Someone must be buying it. You folks are more than welcome to my share. ;)

Spam and potted meat are 2 different products, I like both. I read a while back that the company that makes spam has said sales are way up since osama has begun his reign of terror in the white house. A lot of folks are buying it for a survival meat, cause they see hard times ahead. Keeps for years, can be eaten cooked or uncooked. My favorite way is fried just a bit crispy. We used it as a breakfast meat camping as a kid. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

True SPAM and potted meat are two totally separate items made from entirely different components BUT SPAM does package it's product in a potted meat sized can and looking a wee bit like it but MUCH better tasting. I keep that on hand at all times also.

As for potted meat and vienna sausage I will eat ONLY Libby's brand.

If it says Libby's Libby's Libby's on the label label label you will like it like it like it.

Man I love me some spam. My favorite way to eat is slice it up and throw it on the grill. When it gets done throw a slice of cheese on it and let melt. Slap it on some bread with mayo on you have some fine eating. I grew up eating spam. My grandmother had what seemed like dozens of ways to fix it. I got five or six cans of it in the cabinet now. This is making me hungry,I might go fix some now. ;D

Never seen spam in a can like potted meat, I'll have to check that out. Never grilled it either, that, I'll definitely try. Put on a big pot of ham and mixed beans tonight, be done right after church tomorrow, but all this talk about spam I'm prety sure I'll grill some for supper tomorrow evening. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Early in my career I traded all my C-rats for ham and Lima beans since it seemed to be be less likely  to cause dysentary. MRE's came along and ruined all that. SPAM is a great keeper and as stated by others, it is very versatile. As to my stock piling supplies against a bad time: I don't have any guns either! ;D

I can see by a lot of the posts here a lot of us started eating spam in our younger years. When I was a kid ,my family had a few hard times ,as did most, and we had more than a few meals that included spam , and even chipped beef, and we all know what that is used for.My point is ,that spam is more than just meat in a can to some of us,we ate it ,and liked it,and the tough times didn't seem so bad when there was Spam for dinner.
