More carronade artwork
« on: August 29, 2009, 06:51:52 AM »

Hello Gentlemen,
I am new to the group but have been following your forum for some time.  I thought it would be fun to share with you some of my artwork.
This gunade or carronade with trunions was inspired in part by the center trunioned gunade on page 53 of the 2001-2002 South Bend Replicas catalog as well as the carronade drawing on page 79 of Round Shot and Rammers.  I chose the carraige on page 37 of the same book.

The barrel is 39" long with a 4 1/8" bore.  The rear reinforcing ring is 10 3/4" in diameter.  It has 3" trunions.
I opted to give it a threaded wood leveling screw because I liked the challenge.  It is not cupped at the muzzle.
There is an original with almost exactly the same dimensions on display at the Alamo in San Antonio.
It was fun to make and I have made many others including a matched pair of full scale British Light Six Pounders and a half scale 1841 Six Pounder on a number 1 carraige.  All are made out of wood and certainly do not fire but they look very real.
What a great hobby this is.  My lovely wife is very tolerant so my house is full of these things.
I am open to critizism because I'm always looking to improve.

All pine 2 X 12's from Home Depot except the leveling screw.  I had to use oak for strength.  The whole thing is put together with wooden pegs.  The trunion pin chains and 4 pieces of allthread and a few eye bolts are the only metal.  All the rings are wood.

RocklockI,
I have in fact sold a few carriages.  I don't think I would feel good about trying to convert my pieces into a blank gun.  The trunnion caps are wood, the cap pins also.  It is just not strong enough to take the forces.
On the other hand I made a 3/4 scale split trail carriage out of oak for a South Bend barrel I have and it shoots fine.
You can see it as well as other wooden guns I have made on my web site www.jmelledge.com
My website email is currently down so don't try to use it.

Thanks Navygunner,
It is my passion.  I try really hard to be historically accurate.  But I end up with an awful lot of hours in them.  The biggest advantage of these things is that I get to keep them in the house.  They are not too heavy to move.

I'm not sure the calender wants non-working replicas.
Here are a few pics of a 1/2 scale parrott rifle I made.

We had a fellow here not too long ago who was looking to build an 18th C. cannon & Carriage for a scouting display

from what I see you could turn them a barrel,

Something else to think about, you are half way there to producing a shooting cannon,  a wood form could be used to sand cast

a proper cannon.

Cannons are acceptable on the calendar, so are mortars.

They also must have have a photo posted in the post.  I haven't been able so far to attach a Kewpie to those up loaded attachment pictures. That may change as I think I figured out what to do.  Keep watching for kewpie!
