7mag to fast for deer?
« on: August 29, 2009, 01:27:18 PM »
I was talking to a buddy of mine about my new 7mag and he said that he lost a lot of deer with a 7mag because its so fast that it goes right thru them and he never found them so he dont have any use for a 7mag anymore. Was wondering if anyone else felt that way?

I don't know about all that..... ::)
I plastered a nice hog through the lungs with one around '92, a borrowed Interarms.  Hog very quickly stopped running.
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

A lot depends on the bullet composition you are using in it.......I once shot a deer with a sks carbine with a jhp that did not expand at all.  Yes after a long track I found the deer and it did die, but both entry and exit holes were the same size and the blood trail was miniscule.  The deer ran almost 2000 yds. without being pushed.  A bullet that is good for elk may not be so good on white tail, etc.

he very likely was useing bullets to heavy and of too stout of construction.a 7 mm bullet made for elk or bear might very well pass right on thru without expanding if no heavy bone or thick tissue was encountered.if i felt the need to use that heavy of a rifle in my area for deer i would probably stick with 145 grn or less bullets that were constructed for lighter game.not varmint bullets mind yu but ones that were made for deer sized game.

So would I be better to use a 145 grain or smaller for deer?

My 7MM RM has taken several deer, too fast is not the way I'd put it but it can really damage some meat.  I feel the big 7 is a bit overly powerful for Texas whitetails but it does kill them quickly.  I push a 150 gr. Ballistic Tip at 2900 fps.  It does go right thru but they don't go very far.

Yea, something major wrong with this! Yea, we can get the usual bullet construction stories & all of that, but if it wasn't working for him, why did he shoot "ALOT" of Deer with his setup before making this startling
conclusion?  ::)

I totally concur.

Please give your friend this tip from me:  Gut shot or most likely complete misses on deer will run for miles and miles.

Oh, not that it really matters, but 7mag what (7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm Weatherby Magnum, or some other?

I've never heard the 7 mag was too fast to kill deer. Buy some ammo with 150gr bullets (Remington or Winchester) and go hunting. I have heard of folks being recoil shy and not hitting game in the kill zone and then coming up with wild stories why the game got away. :o

Tell your friend his experiences must always agree with with everyone elses.  The 7mm RM is a good cartridge with the right bullet for the job.  One of the lighter Remington Core-Lokts will do just fine.  I would avoid the Nosler Ballistic Tips.

jonrob –

I’ve been using a 7mm RM on everything from prairie dogs to elk since 1982.  (Well, not everything, just p-dogs, coyotes, antelope, mule deer and elk).  For most of those years I used a 160g Grand Slam and it took me 20 years to recover one.  During that time I never had to chase or even track an animal I’d shot as they either went straight down (often), took only a few steps (equally often) or made it more than a few yards (very rarely).  The longest “tracking” job I’ve had was about 40 yards and that was a one-time thing – the next longest was maybe 10-15 yards or so.

Match the bullet to the velocity range and you won’t have any problems.  I personally don’t care for cup-and-core bullets at impact speeds over about 2600fps, which means I no longer use them in any of my bolt guns, even the .308 Win – the problem is you never know when you will end up with a close-in shot.  Two years ago I was ready to squeeze the trigger on a cow elk at 500 yards in open grass hills when another hunter started banging away and the herd turned my direction.  The elk got under the near horizon formed by the hill I was on and my next opportunity was at 25 feet.

That same year I was shooting 140g North Forks a little over 3200fps in my 7mm RM and took a buck mule deer at a range between 80 and 125 yards (would have to look it up to get more exact).  The buck turned just as the trigger broke and a quartering-away shot became a hit low in the right ham.  I figured a large portion of the ham would be destroyed but that wasn’t the case.  We recovered that bullet from up against the sternum.

Put me down as a firm believer in the benefits of using bullets that expand reliably while providing controlled - but limited - expansion with high weight retention.  For that reason I prefer North Forks, Trophy Bonded and  A-Frames over Partitions; TTSX and MRX over most other types, and bonded core bullets like AccuBond and InterBond over Ballistic Tips and similar.

I can't think of any 140 gr 7mm bullets that would be to hard for deer, there may be some that are fragile for close shots though.

Speer Manual #12 has the following recommendation when it comes to the 145-grain bullets and lighter except for the Grand Slam. “ The 145-grain and lighter be limited to game the size of antelope or smaller.”  “The high velocity of the 7mm Magnum can cause light bullets to break up on tissue resulting in shallow penetration on large deer.”

I tried some 145-grain Speer in my 7MM Mag.  It is an accurate bullet in my rifle using H4831 and magnum primers.  I kind of fell in love with 160-grain loads, second by 175-grain loads in the rifle.  My 7MM Magnum plays second fiddle to the 270 Winchester my first love.

A hunting partner has shot a lot of deer with his 7MM Remington Magnum using 150-grain Remington C-L bullets.  Having helped butcher the deer afterwards there is no doubt the bullet expanded and caused a lot of damage.

I shot a running bore with a nosler 160gr partition at 40yds and that killed my bore. My 7mm has done it part for me. I would take it deer hunting no problem.

The old statement that "it is not the arrow that kills the deer but the Indian" still holds. Use an adequate bullet and rifle, and it is up to you. Is the 30-30 too slow?--ask all the deer that have been killed by it in over the last 100 years, I would imagine that they will disagree with it being to slow.

I'm sorry, haven't you heard? The 30-30 is best used for rats around the woodshed and doesn't have enough power to dispatch a cottontail. Forget all of those millions of animals that have fallen to this time-tested cartridge. Get yourself a rifle with "magnum" in the name and I'm sure you will sleep better at night...albeit with a sore shoulder. :)

hunt-m-up & schnarrgj, I believe that crash was just being a little sarcastic & not serious!  We all know that a 30-30 is fine for Deer at the appropriate range.
