Sacralidge
« on: August 29, 2009, 02:23:29 PM »
I picked up a srplus 91/30 last year for $75.00 and am considering turning it into a trunk gun. Turning down the bolt, cutting back the barrel to 16"-20" and mounting a low power scope. Any thoughts from others on this?

I think You'll Regret cutting the barrel that short the fireball and muzzle blast will be nutty crazy.  If ya want a short one get a M44.

What is the difference between cutting the barrel and a 44?

BTW I used to shoot a 1917 Enfield 30-06 with a 16 1/4" barrel.So I am familar with the blast and flame.
Once the barrel went south I had it rebuilt in 375 H&H with a 25" barrel.

Or an M38 or a 91/59.  The M44 has a bayonet, the M38 and the 91/59 don't.  But 6' long fireballs (in broad daylight, no less) are fun.

Keep in mind, too, that the Mosin carbines, while shorter and a bit handier, are still nearly as heavy as the full length rifles.

If you're going to hack on the gun anyway, consider cutting an inch or two off of the stock and replacing that length with a recoil pad.  If you're going to defile the thing by cutting down the barrel, bending the bolt and drilling and tapping for a scope, you might as well make it slightly less unpleasant to get smacked by while you're at it.  Or, rather than hacking the stock, you might consider one of these, but hacking the stock and installing a pad will be cheaper.

Here's mine.  I got the cheap scope and mount off of Ebay for $60 and it seems to work ok (after generous amounts of locktite).  Total cost in the gun now is right at $130 - cheaper than the scopes my other rifles wear.  It's been an on-and-off truck gun for me for quite some time now and shoots great.  Best thing, I can return it to original condition whenever I want to . . . no permanent modifications.

It's a machine and there are 10 million more of them out there, just do as you please with it, have fun and learn a little while you are doing it.  Larry

The only bad thing about cutting the barrels short like that is the noise. I have a sportered 91/30 with an 18" barrel and it is LOUD :o.
Aside from that... it shoots well.
