Rate that Loose Powder

Rate in order from 1 -4 the following powders. Feel free to note things like ease of cleaning, accuracy, range, etc. I have a Huntsman non-magnum, Standard 7/8 Plug, have 25 acp plug, and thanks to the great advice from the GBO gang will have a MU plug soon!! So far have only used one form of loose, Pyrodex with Hornady 250gr SST Sabots.

777 ?
BlackHorn ?
Jim Shocky Gold ? [ the guys in the general ML forum like this stuff, never used, how does NEF perform with?]

Blackhorn in my opinion is #1 the rest are just ok and require too much cleaning.

carbineman, what is your bullet wt and powder wt. Also what works best for you in the primer dept?

Blackhorn and MU is a marriage made in Heaven! shot mine about 15 times yesterday, got home pulled BP dropped in carb cleaner ran a hoppes patch down a few times then a brass brush a couple of times, then 2 patches, this morning got out BP Teflon inserted done. the whole cleaning process took maybe 4 mins except letting the BP soak, could have cleaned last night but it comes out clean over night without scrubbing!

I have only used BP grease on my factory and 25 acp plug for the Huntsman, same on an old Knight I once had, it used #11 caps. Must you use teflon on the MU plug? Is it different than regular teflon tape?

Regular teflon tape should work just fine. I still use bore butter or just about anything I can get my hands on rather than the tape. I have found with the 1/2" "nut" on the MU plug, I can get it out with zero problems using my six point nutdriver. Use just a very little BB and you avoid a smeary mess.

The teflon just helps keep the gas and soot out of the threads, which makes the cleanup easy. Plus it asures that the plug is easy to remove. Blackhorn is not like T7 it will not stick your BP but the soot and gas can prentrate the threads, so it helps stop that. If u use blackhorn no more water, no more borebutter, no more crudring, no more swabbing between shots!

I use 80-90 grains Blackhorn and a Metrics Unlimited breechplug (Thanks Nick!)with a 200 grain Dead Center all lead bullet in .40 diameter. For a primer I use Federal 209A's I don't push the loading much as I'm just using it to kill a deer. My muzzleloader is a 24" barreled stainless Sidekick.

Mine is fairly accurate and I haven't done much testing with it. This fall/winter I will do some more load testing though.

When using the Huntsman with MU Plug and any powder, I see some of you saying there is a difference in 209 ML Primers and regular shotshell primers, some even for .410s. Please give info to clear this up for me. Related to original post, what works best? Thanks!

bubba, lets say you were dialed in with pyrodex, then you switched to 777. Did you see a major shift in zero at 100 yds?

not major it was about 2 to 3 inches higher and slightly to the left easy scope adjustment

I have been using Shockeys Gold for a couple of yrs good stuff easy clean . I do have some of the Blackhorn to try now though. Kurt
