Any 17HMR shooter see this...
« on: August 30, 2009, 11:08:06 AM »
We went to the range today to fine tune some rimfires for upcoming hunting season. Two different 17HMR's, two different brands of ammo from three different lots. ALL had occasional split necks.  I don't really think its dangerous, but it troubles me.

Any one else have this happen?

I dunno if it's still true, but ALL 17hmr ammo used to be made by CCI in their Lewiston plant, so it doesn't surprise me if all brands have the problem which has been happening since it's release, there are lots of old discussions on it at RFC going back 5yrs.

One of the European outfits that is known for super quality match ammo also makes the round but might use CCI cases to do so I really am not sure. Can't recall who. To the best of my knowledge tho all other is loaded by CCI.

Similar results in 4 different rifles including one custom with a Lilja barrel.

What timing!

Remington just announced a buyback recall on all their semi-auto 17hmr guns and all the ammo purchased for these guns for this same reason!

Yeah, I had a couple of split cases, and they were CCI.  There may have been many more, but the rifle is an ejector, and I never crawled around looking for them.  The couple I saw didn't alarm me because the flaw was obviously in the case and not the rifle.

As long as it hits the target and does not blow up in my face, I don't care what the case does.  Cases are not reusable so who cares.  I've shot hundreds (several boxes of 50) of them, with no problems.  And only one misfire.

Thanks for the comments guys, this is pretty much what I'm thinking, just wanted to see if anyone else experienced the same thing.

Well to be honest, I have never looked at any of my empties.  When I open the gun they are gone and I am not interested in what they look like.

I wouldn't worry much in a break open.My 17M2 splits few.Had,key word had,a 10-22 that converted to a 17m2.Did all the springs, heavy bolt handle and everything else.Still had blow back problems after a few rounds 100-150.When you shoot left handed with a blow back semi,it's a pretty loud bang and then feeling the blast and particles hitting you in the face.Sold the parts and went back to my Sportster.May or may not split, but I never know it.Slow

i've experienced the cracked cases, too.

i'm not really too surprised after all, to get the velocity they do, it's gotta be high pressure for such a small/thin brass case.

I've shot the 17HMR in both a converted 77/22 Mag Ruger with a GM barrel and a H&R Handi, and haven't seen any splits, but then I have to admit I haven't examined every case.  Necks were blackened, as you'd expect with a case shape like that.   I've shot Federal, Remington, CCI & Hornady brands, but keep coming back to the Hornady brand.  I think Remington is now made by Eley? but it is my understanding that all the rest come out of CCI.  All are accurate, but the POI tends to be different, which is why I have tried to settle on one brand (if available).  I've got a Handi HM2, which I have not used nearly as much, and other than the darkened neck, seems to not have any splits.  Wierd, but I doubt that the neck issue would be brand related.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.
