I learned something today

I learned something today that should have been obvious.  I hesitate to share this but I have some time so here it goes.  I took my Parrott out today to spend some time trying to sight it in.  I placed an empty steel barrel out at 100 yards.  After the first six shots I put a 4x8 sheet of OSB behind it.  I used 400 grains of FF and golf balls.  I thought that they would stay pretty straight for at least 100 yards.  I was shooting slightly down hill.  I first sighted the target using the method that DD shared in an earlier post.  I then would adjust the sights to the target each time.  Here comes the lesson,  I kept hitting the ground in-front of the target and the ball would skip up over the target and OSB into the woods behind.  I tried adjusting several times and never got on target.  I was either too high or too low.  My fourteen year old son went down with me to inspect the damage, or lack of it, when he got down on the ground in front of the target and said, "Dad, I can't see your cannon from here".  The ground in front of the target was just high enough to obstruct it so that I could not hit it.  Boy did I feel dumb.  We moved the target ahead just a bit and I got it on the next shot.  The other thing I discovered is that my cannon needs to sit level.  It was sitting so that when I move the the back to the left or right it would change the elevation up or down depending on which way I moved it.  This all sounds pretty elementary as I write it, but I now won't forget these things.

IF you figure out how to make golf ball go straight .....please let me know .

it's been my experiance that the dimples and thier ballistics proly work fine ....when coming of a #1 wood ...

but not that good when going 1000fps .

fox has steel balls ! i got another 50 held aside .

i noticed that the cannon recoiled very little , with a steel ball and sabot and just a bit more powder . it will recoil a good 2 feet . and goes striaght and trueish ....and safely too.

if you figure it out it should be a stickey !

     Tim, please continue with your golf ball experiments.  Like Gary, we have not figured them out yet either.  Somehow we doubt that even at lower velocities will they fly straight consistently.  We are not flog ball people, but I have hit enough of them at driving ranges to know what a hook and slice does to the ball's trajectory.  We believe that the randomness with which they are delivered to the target is their only consistent flight characteristic.  We would dearly love to be proven wrong here, because the ammo is so cheap!

The ground in front of the target was just high enough to obstruct it so that I could not hit it.

We had this same problem at the Montana Shoot for the 100 yard targets.  With the gun on the ground, there was enough curvature that you couldn't see the target.  Next time, I am bringing a table to fire from.

Yes they do.  It was intended for blue birds, but the swallows take it over along with three others that you cannont see.  Thanks for the compliment on the photo.  My daughter took it between videos.  She is 12 and very interested in shooting cannons.  She helps me make the charges and cuts fuse and tapes golf balls to the powder charges.  God has been very good to me.

the dragon would be ok ...theres a small space under my stairs where she could sleep .

.....scottsmen  ....?  ask her if she would be willing to sleep under the stairs in the house of a gremary ?

tell her preimer stalin said it was ok ! chairman mao too and uncle ho all agree . the russian ladies work the hardest to live of anyone else works harder to live .

Victor, a very cliche'd misconception of Russian women. Dragons come in all sorts of packages. For rubber necking and eyes on stilts St.PETE has the largest percent and concentration of beautifull women of any city I know,and Vladivostok chucks out the odd ' not too shabby one' too. Unfortunately, attached is the particular hook.......line.........and sinker that nailed my butt. I have seen her buffalo a Moscow cop with two sentences and take out a Vladivostok Casino Security Man with a look. After we were married (of course) she sweetly informed me she was known at work as the ice princess.Should have guessed from all the toothy grins I was getting at the wedding,didn't know the Russian word for.........dumb.

I will move my lawn next summer also
but Im still interested in the trailer and wardrobes
dont need any more ice here , especially not during the summer
maybe gary need some ice , or maybe he lives to far north  ;D

 I know, I know.... Please forgive me, Carronader.

 We have a lovely lady where I work. ~15 years my junior and one rung up the corporate ladder.

 A while back my boss says, "Victor, that Russian wants you to go work for her. I told her you're not for sale."

 I responded, "That's good. My Wife would body-slam me."

My golf balls fly relatively straight (usually) out to about 75 yards.  I've yet to get a decent group any further than that.  They just start floating and slice wherever they want.  I normally shoot about 8 inch groups out to 75 yards, which to me is great.
