45 caliber huntsman, what's up with it? - keep or convert?
« on: September 01, 2009, 11:02:44 AM »
I was arranging for the receipt of my 50 cal huntsman, and my FFL indicated he knew someone with a 45 cal huntsman that needed some receiver work, so he's selling it cheap.

Now, I have receivers already, but I am curious about the barrel.

I'm guessing its 24", but I don't know for sure.  Did they make them longer?

My tinkering mentality is telling me to do some chamber work and build some sort of 45 caliber cartridge gun, as I don't need another ML.

what can you tell me about the 45cal huntsman.

What do you think about a conversion to a lower pressure cartridge gun.

(I know it will need an extractor)

Thanks

Jeff

I believe all the .45's came on cast iron frames not even SB1 at least mine is and I think the lugs are a little differant. Kurt

Different lugs would take the fun out of it.

I'd still get it just to have as they don't make them anymore and if it's cheap enough not a bad piece for any collection even good trade fodder as it does not need FFL transfer. I shoot mine and love it. Kurt

It's one with the push in breech.  Needs the foreend lug re-soldered also.  And a new firing pin.

The rifling looks good, and the exterior is nice but its losing its appeal.

All 5 of my older Huntsmans have 28" bbl's. # of them have push in plugs. Kurt
