Does anyone use the Speer 130 gr. 7mm Hot-Cor bullet ?
« on: September 02, 2009, 04:15:06 AM »
A couple of years ago I found a box of Speer Hot-Cor 130 gr. 7mm bullets at a gunshow and for $ 7.00 so I just grabbed them not knowing what I would use them for.
I built a 7 X 57 R single shot rifle for my friend and thought I would shoot some of these up to get a idea how the gun shot. I started with 35 grs. of H 4895 and worked up until I hit on a load of 38.6 grs. H 4895 with the Speer 130s that shoots under a 1/2 " @ 100 yards.  I have never found a load this fast that shot this good so quickly before !!
What I want to know is if any of you use this bullet for deer or antelope as we are going antelope hunting the end of this month in WY and I think this is the load.          Jedman    ;D

Just going by the remaks from Speer on the suitability for the 130 gr. bullet, it qualifies for small deer and antelope at the velocities. I presume approx 2500 fps is what you get with that powder load.

I shoot them all the time from my carbine length 7-30 Waters. They go 2500-2550 with a dose of ww748. Knocks down our mule deer like bowling pins.

;)Over the years I shot quite a few whitetailed deer with 130 grain Speer hot cores out of a 7mm Mag. and 7mm Wea. Both did fine, but ranges for the most part were 200 yards or less, and deer were thick, so only broadside lung shots or shoulder shots were taken. None of the deer were northern deer, most were maybe 100 130 pounds. The 130's did a good job. ;)

Thanks,  Thats what I was hopeing that I would here about them, they should be in the same velocity range as the 7-30 Waters. We will give them a try on the doe antelope we have 8 tags for them.

Jedman,

These are good bullets for target, deer, and antelope.  I use them in my 7-30 Waters.
