Russian 3 pounder Unicorn

This picture came out of the South Bend Catalog. I have been considering making one out of wood for display. Does anyone have any idea of the dimensions of this thing? What kind of carriage did it sit on? Sutter apparantly had one in California at his fort.

sorry that I cant help you any much in this , but I got 2 pic that will give you other models with only one dolphin

this are small and low quality pictures from the artillery museum in st petersburg russia .

you can see the 2 lower placed barrels with only one dolphin
in the other pic I think the barrel in the back also is a unicorn

Zulu, You are correct, Sutter did have one in Sacramento, CA at his Fort. We went back in time to that fort, just as the last group of Russians was leaving to get these photos of the 3-pdr. Unicorn Cannon for you.

The wheel diameter is about 10 inches less than a full-size CW 12-pdr Napoleon wheel, about 47 or 48". You can interpolate the rest of the dimensions from this size. Maybe the Fort has drawings of this gun, but we doubt it. They were more into grinding grain, medicine and dry goods displays. We did spot three or four fired aluminum foil powder cartridge remnants, so at least they fire their cannon occasionally! All in all a nice place to visit if you are ever near the town from which the 'Governator' governs.

Thanks for the pics. This is exactly what I was looking for. I think it is an interesting gun. If the wheels are approx. 48" the the barrel is in the 40" range or so.

Back in early 2008 Cannonmn posted a thread going on this subject, in the thread there are some links to other sites with info that I posted.

On the Seacoast photo's posted you will note that the elevation on the photo's is wrong, it should be under the base ring on the cannon not under the casiable someone
messed up and put a smaller tube on one meant for a larger cannon, also the trunnion caps are bolted down another incorrect feature.

Excellent pics in that older post. Those gunmakers were the real craftsmen.
The "dish" on the wheels is outstanding. That is extremely difficult to replicate. The wheels I made in the above photos of the white split trail are not dished. I need to take a real wheel making course.

Well if you do, I am sure there would be interest in a well made set of wheels here on the board, this is something people do look for,
you would have to talk to the management if it is done as a business, and become a sponsor. just something to think about.

One of the links in the Cannon internet resource is to a guy peddling some books on how to make wheels.

I am surprised our resident engineer has hasn't yet taken you to task yet for leaving stress riser in the bottom of your barrel...

In the design of the inside of the barrel you have several ways to make it. If you make the inside shape at the end of the bore smooth and hemispherical the stresses are distributed evenly across a wide area; onthe other hand if there is a sharp inside corner the stresses are bunched together - becoming a place where the sum of the stresses can easily surpass the strength of the material. The feature is often called a 'stress riser'.

Not to worry here. Even white glue produces a bond stronger than the wood itself.

Sorry, Tim, could not resist, your eagle eye always catches those stress risers...and I saw this one before you!

Zulu, since your cannon is none firing, you realy don't have a stress riser. In a firing gun the square corner between bore wall and breech woul not only be a poitn where debris could collect and be difficult to clean, but it would be a focus of stess and where a crack might start under the right condition.
