The newer direct injection diesels don't.  I just didn't want the poor fellow ruining an afternoon looking for something that wasn't there.

A diesel has glow plugs and that is very different from a spark plug.  The glow plug just heats the combustion chamber.  Combustion happens because of compression and heat.  That is why diesels get much better mileage when running hot..That is why you see them idling all the time at truck stops.  Glow plugs can go much longer than spark plugs.

  UNLESS you get a REAL diesel.

  My Cummins doesn't have glow plugs, and i'm HAPPY it doesn't!

  Glo plugs are in the intake manifold to preheat the incoming air, not in the chamber and if you use ether on one so equipped it just may blow up on you. Ford plugs require a special tool to remove the coil from the plug and if you mess up a coil it is about 100 bucks for replacement Lots cheaper to pay the guy to change them out for you.

special tool?  Our 98 f250 uses a socket to remove a screw from the coil pack and then just pull the rubber boot ( coil) right off of the spark plug.

Coils run anywhere from $40 to $60 depending on where you find it.

Well, just got back from a show, and double checked my mileage, and I'm getting 18.8mpg with the van. So I think I'll keep running it for a little while longer. Thanks for the tips!! Now to start a new tread on tires.  gypsyman
