S&W I Bolt
« on: September 04, 2009, 03:52:08 PM »
Just laid away an I Bolt 25-06, had sold my Stevens 200 25-06 so I made the mistake of picking the I bolt up. Felt great in my hands and, you know, I had a bunch of 25-06 reloads and dies for it, so, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.......haha...........pick it up Tuesday.
Anyone here have an I bolt?

No, I don't have an I-bolt.  Isn't the I-bolt to the T/C Icon as the Stevens is to the Savage?  Meaning, I-bolt is the same basic rifle as the Icon, but in a less pretty package?  I'll be curious to see what you think of it.  It has the shorter 60 degree bolt lift like a Browning A/X-bolt, correct?

I have an I-bolt in 25-06, picked it up about a year ago, new with the rebate, it cost me $250.00.  Has the camo stock.  Trigger is OK, a little creep in it, doesn't shoot quite as well as my Savage, even after I pillar bedded it.  Mine will not feed reliably from the magazine and when I got it I had a problem with light pin strikes and fail to fire.  I had to take it apart and turn some off the fireing pin stop to get enough pin protrusion to fire right.  Hope you have better luck with yours than I have had with mine, but I will get it sorted out and I think it will be an acceptable hunting rifle.  Also check for a punch mark on the under side of the bolt handle to make sure the recall has been done on it.   The adjustment for trigger creep is on the rear of the trigger and covered with sealant, turn it in to take out creep, if you turn it in too much the safety will not engauge, good luck, just don't plan on hunting with it straight out of the box.  Larry

Talked to S&W today about getting a new magazine to try to fix my feed problems.  You and I are S.O.L. for parts, they don't make these rifles any more, (sort of a bad experment he said) so you are on your own for parts etc.  I am now working over a Remington 710 mag to fix my problems.  Larry

guess I got lucky with mine. Had to adjust the creep on mine also it was driving me crazy. out of the box shot the rem factory corelokts good just under 3/4" at 100 yards. I bought it for a cheap coyote gun mine shoots the light bullets better than the heavier ones. really likes the 85 gr nos BT with RL-19. Thats a shame they quit making them for the price I paid with the rebate I thought it was much better than the stevens. I tried to order the xl7 but no one could get them in 25-06 at the time.

I was getting 2 1/2 inch groups, when I worked the bolt, 2 rounds would pop out and fail to load one.
I already have a 270 and 7-08 Marlin, they shoot MOA and less. My Stevens 7-08 is  very accurate, but the 25-06 Stevens  was just average, 1 1/2 inch groups

The only real issue I have is with the feeding from the magazine, and I will get that sorted out.  It is really a shame that you have to fool with them so much to get them usable, they feel good and the trigger is excellent once you adjust it right.  I think the initial recall probably killed them, then they fire-saled them off for $250.00 with the rebate so no one wants to pay $450.00 for them any more.  Looks like a lot of people on Gunbroker are stuck with a bunch of them.  Larry

I have one in 30-06, and like it very much, ... out of the box it shoots (handloads) 165 sierra's into a inch, most other handloads also...  its a bit heavier than my Marlin xl7 (270) and the bolt is sorta 'funny' but its a keeper as far as I'm concerned, it feeds well, trigger is ok, I did the recall thing, got it back with the dot.. now it sits in the safe and waits...  Bob

S&W found a magazine and sent it to me for free.  First try they sent the follower, but on the second try they got it right.  After talking to them a little, it seems they do not have any drawings or exploded views to work from, so if you need parts, make sure you can discribe it extremely well.  Now it functions OK, I will shoot it and see if I can make it get close to my Savage.  Could be if I wrap them both up in a blanket together some of the Savage accuracy will rub off on the I-bolt.  Larry

I pick up my Marlin XK7 25-06 today, my other 2 have been excellent shooters, as well as my new Savage 243..............wish my Ibolt had been better, but I much prefer the Marlins and Savages.......
