1977 BLR .308 price?
« on: September 04, 2009, 04:19:56 PM »
Hello I am looking at a 1977 .308 BLR that appears to be in near perfect condition. It has a weaver k2.5-1 scope on it. I want to use it for caribou and the odd moose. Any idea what a fair price would be? I trust the fella selling it but I just thought I would get some opinions...I think he wants $700.00 for the package. Any thoughts?

I read a few posts on the older BLR's and since he is throwing in two clips as well as 20 rounds of reloaded ammo I think I am gonna go for it. I will try it out tomorrow and if it shoots like a hunting gun I will probably take the plunge...I'm still interested to hear opinions though...

I honestly have no clue what such are going for but a look at Gun Broker or one of the other gun auction sites should give you a fair idea. That's easily twice what I personally would pay for one but clearly that doesn't mean others aren't paying more.

Personally, I'd disregard the reloads - but the early steel-receiver Miroku BLR's worth $450-$500 US, the spare mags $40-$50 each, with the K2.5 worth whatever (check sleeze-bay).

The Weaver's a great scope, and desired for brush hunting and/or a DGR - while others regard them as an archaic POS.
I luv um, so IMHO the scope's worth up to $150-$175.   ;)

And at least 50 times what it's worth to me but then I'm NOT a fan of Weaver scopes new or old.

I think the price is a bit on the high side but still reasonably fair- if you like the outfit just go for it.  I lucked into a 1980's minty .358 BLR with a Leupy 1.5-5 Vari-X 3, with case for $495 early summer at a local gunshop (Vt).  I still wonder what the dealer was thinking... that scope IS worth a few bucks ???  It's extremely accurate with my loads and has become one of my favorite rifles ever.  You only live once so don't let it go if you think you want it just to save a few bucks.  They don't up nearby where you can handle and examine them very often.

Dealers often seem to place little to no value on scopes on rifles. I bought a Chinese copy of the Browning .22 semiauto rifle once because it had a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8 scope on it. New the scope along was worth more than the total price paid for the package. I later traded it back to him with an elcheapo junk scope on it replacing the Leupold I kept. He gave me in trade the same price I paid him with Leupold on it. I figure I wound up with at most $100 in that scope perhaps less. One of the better deals I've ever made really.

Thanks a lot for all the info folks. Incidentally the prices are in canadian but that doesn't make much difference these days. My brother is going to buy it as I already have a good caribou/close range moose rifle. The blr is nice to handle. He is trying to decide whether to keep the scope or not. Might be nice to have a little more magnification.
