sour 308 Handi Rifle **UPDATE**
« on: September 04, 2009, 05:13:53 PM »
After this session with this Handi gun, sure is leavin bad impression on me for any of these guns. Took this brand new 308 caliber handi which we bought for my son, his first new rifle ever. Got to the range, put up targets, set up the gun rest, put the 308 cartrige down into chamber and the barrel would not close up! Tried that again, no lockup! The rifle without a cartrige in it closes and locks just fine. Took the rifle back to where we bought it from. The man gets in touch with H&R/ New England whatever there name these days. Anyway, now they want to have the gun sent to them for repair ??? A, but its a new rifle? Ain't it?  Would not it be the right thing for H&R/ New England arms to take this one back and send us a new rifle? One that did'nt get past their final ream job? scout4<><

I would say that the shop where you bought it should give you a replacement and then they would send it back for repair.
That is the way I would handle it if I owned the business and you bought it from me.

Try Spankys suggestion and see if that takes care of it first.
If not, then take it back and ask for a replacement.
If the dealer won't trade you (which IMO he should) and you do send it back it would be the dealers responceabilty to do so at no charge to you.
You bought a new gun that isn't right.
In a nice way I would insist on a replacement.
That is the correct way to do business, the way your grand father would do it, the old time way!
Good luck and don't give up on HANDYs because of just this one.

Hi! Thanks for replies. I took the rifle back to the smithy, after checking it out and talking to a person from H&R, the conclusion is h&r missed this one in the last part of their manufacturing process. They did'nt get that final ream down into the chamber for the 308 case so the butt of case stuck out enough to not allow the barrel to close and lock up. Rifle is already being send back. Maybe it come back better thn new. scout4<><

I wonder how they test fired it?

Yes, I wonder as well!?   ???
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?

Hi Tim! I do not know the numbers. Rifle is already packaged up an may even be sent back by now. The smithy said it would go out today. Anyway, to answer questions, the ammunition was Federal premium, Federal power shok, and Federal eagle brand rifle cartriges 150 gr. - 180gr. and the smithy checked and double checked the depth of chamber showed me that himself. The woman he talked to said not every firearm is checked and that some do get by that last ream  ::) yeah right. ....Lets see,... Rossi makes a 308. scout4<><

I suspect it may have been one of the last made at Gardner since it couldn't have been test fired, Ilion test fires them, they were even charging for it in error for a while on accessory barrels. Gardner employees knew the end was coming and I can't help but think there were some disgruntled employees that may not have had the company's best interest in mind during the last few months of operation. That said, manufacturing mistakes do happen by all manufacturers. Hopefully you'll get it back in a week or two, repairs are usually done very quickly, but if they have to replace the barrel and don't have it in stock, the wait may be much longer.

Ya know Tim, it would'nt be such a bitter situation if we had another good shooting rifle for my son to be shooting. But we do not. We have this old worn out 7x57 mauser that shoots a shotgun like pattern at 50yds, and thats the big reason for the 308 handi gun. One of the big reasons I took the day off work was to be with my son, and take him to shoot his new rifle. If what you say about "disgruntled employees" is a part of what happened, then its a sad thing. Not only would they have done damage to their employer, but they have done damage to far more then that. Now conclude that with a company thats been manufacturing these rifles for decades who should have this down to a perfection, and some woman gives a lame excuse that not all guns are checked and some get past that last chamber ream. Not good enough for me! Not when the moneys for this 308 handi rifle have been hard earned and hard to come by. scout4<><

I agree, it is a sad thing. However, this is a reality that most likely did happen.  :-\  I am sorry that this happened and it shouldn't have either. I hope the replacement and finished product is a much better rifle! Good Luck.

scout 4, sorry to hear about your dissapointment. These problems seem to be an everyday occurance for me lately. Not with Rem. but with everyone. I thought this recession may turn out to be good medicine for people. Maybe help get back the old ways of treating people and pride in ourselves and how we do business. I'm not sure now that we would wise up even while standing in a country wide soup line. Enough of that, I feel your pain. By seeing the joy my buddy just had giving his son a Handi for his birthday I can understand your let down. Hopefully it will all turn out well. If that 7x57 isn't too far gone I'd be working on it while I wait. Something the two of you could do together. May just require a little tinkering like the Handis. Good Luck.

Thank you Men for your replies. I do appreciate your support, and the kind offer of your 308. I live a quite a distance from you my friend, farthest most part of north eastern Pennsylvania, a few miles as the crow flys from Susquehanna an New York border. Thank you, we have been workin on that old mauser, new scope and mounts, wire brushed and scrubbed the bore, the usual stuff just shy of gettin into serious money. It once was a very good shooting rifle many years ago. Anyway, thanks again! Have a great weekend! scout4<><

There don't seems to be any light at the end of the Tunnel.
H&R keeps sending out thrash workmanship on the the Handi rifles. I don,t know how long they are going to keep this
shoddy work up.

Me I still have an invalid Handi in the Vault that produces casehead seperations because of a gap which needs fixing. But I am not too ambitious to bother, since I have other rifles that don't give any trouble. The Handi 257R is not going hunting this fall. Sorry for the belly aching and playing the broken record.

Unless the serial number would reveal where it was made and when. It is quite obvious it was never test fired let alone proofed. My guess is it is a Remington gun it is not the first Remington I have seen that would not head space either way and that includes there vaunted model 700. Its called get them out the door as fast as possible. Let cs handle the mess up's. That comes out of different budget then production.

Gentlemen, Imagine my disgust today when I read this post. I picked up a beautiful .308 this week and was heading out to the range this weekend to get started sighting her in. When I got home tonight I loaded a round and try to close with no luck! Did you have to ship back or did they send a call tag?

Rum, was that factory ammo or a handload you tried? I think he had the dealer send it back, but H&R will issue a call tag for return if you call and ask.

it was factory. I did not try to clean it.  Do you think that would help considering the earlier post? Also, would you reccomend a local smith make the repair?

I'd have H&R repair it, they need to know about it. A smith would probably charge the same as a rechamber which can be $100 or more, but it's your money.

After reading your response and my handi-holism kicking in, I decided to take another look at my situation. I opened her up to take a peek and was pleased to see a test round had been fired. When I inspected the the Leverevo by Hornady It was the wrong stuff.  I picked up the .308 Win Leverevo and she locked up tight.  My sour situation yesterday has a sweet ending tonight.

« Reply #23 on: September 28, 2009, 01:44:26 AM »
After only about two short weeks, got a call from our smithy the 308's there so went got it, it is a shooter. Hows 3 shots within an inch at 100 yards sound? I thought that was pretty dog gone good for a new unbroken in barrel. That was with the smithy's hand loads. Have yet to try our factory rounds in it. You were right Tim! Thanks for the encouraging words! Have a good day All. scout4<><

I am glad you got it fixed in a timely fashion so as not to ruin this years hunt. But really if the system had worked that rifle would have never left he factory in the first place.

Given the circumstances of the plant shutdown and move, I don't find it surprising at all that a mistake was made in manufacturing, stuff like this happens occasionally by all manufacturers under normal operating conditions, let alone during a plant closure and move. I think Ilion has done a fantastic job, it's really too bad Customer Support can't get their act together.  ::)
