New 338
« on: September 04, 2009, 06:16:24 PM »
I've looked at her for several months now and finally after all this time, bit the bullet so to speak.  All the new stainless Marlins were being put on the shelf for $739.99 and this one sat in a different case still at $699.99.  Then Shiptons put all the guns on 10% off so it's now even better, $629.99.  Had em open the case and swung it up to my shoulder, fit real nice, balanced well and said "Take me, I'm yours" :D.  Couldn't say no to a come-on like that, so she is waiting for me to finish the deal.  Didn't want to spend all my cash as I'm leaving for the weekend, but she'll come home Tuesday.  DP

That sounds like you left a deposit on one of the plain-vanilla, blued steel/walnut models - which I like a whole lot better than the stainless/lamo version.

I'm lookin' forward to a range report.

Just home from burning a box of shells up getting the scope dialed in and busting some rocks.  Mounted a Loupy VXIII 1.5X5X20 on it and bore sighted.  25 yds first 3 went to the left about 3", 2 touching and one about 2" away.  Moved the dial and shot 2 more, about right.  Bad deal for sighting, a roll of foam sleeping pad on the side rail of my truck, lots of wobbles as the gun didn't sink in the foam.  Anyway, just getting close and seeing how she shot was the objective.  Walked it on out to lazered 108 yd and next 3 shots were again 2 touching and a third out a couple of inches.  Either this baby is gonna shoot, or I wobbled at just the right time. Recoil wasn't bad, not as much as the 444, but I think a Limbsaver will go on any way.  Shot the rest of the box off hand at rocks and the scope kissed me twice, no blood, but enough to have me pull back a bit.  All in all, I like the new addition to the clan. ;)  DP

Sounds like she's a sure keeper!!

I have trouble with scopes wanting to get a bit close, so I've always mounted them as far ahead as the mounts and eye relief would allow. I like that little scope you got her. Very well suited.

Good show!

I just had to use her to get the first deer of the season.  Not one of my best shots, for sure.  Weeds were to tall to get low to have a more stable shot, had to stand straight up with nothing to help steady me in the wind.  Radio said the wind was 25-30 with gusts of 45 mph, just a slight breeze here in Montana. ::) ;D  Got her on my property so I know the range was about 220 yds, bullet hit just in front of her R shoulder and exited just in front of the L shoulder joint.  Got the L lung and just left soup in the chest of her, heard the WHOCK when it hit, she jumped and went in the trees about 20 ft and tipped over. 8)  One nice fat dry mule doe, no fawns with her, no milk in the udder.  I really think this gun is going to be one of my favorites. :-*  I did move the scope ahead just a bit, and with my coat on, didn't even get close to my brow.  Now she has to set out the rest of the dance for this year. :'(  To many others that need to be blooded, don't have enough tags to please em all this year. :(  Hope ya'll have a great season.  DP

Still a great report!

I have a pal with an Winchester 88 carbine. It's a boring 308 and he has oft thought of having it redone in 338 Federal. I keep talking him out of altering a pristine carbine, but it is his and he no doubt will have it done before long. He just turned 70 and should have what he wants.

Don't blame ya for trying to talk him out of reboring a pristine 88.  But, I'm sure he has had it for years and feels like part of him.  At 70 he should do what he wants, may not be able to hunt or shoot to many more years.  When I hit 70 I may get my steel 358 BLR rechambered to a 35-284 just to make my kids mad. ;D  DP

Great report dpe.ahoy.  I have been considering putting a 338me next to my 444, but I need to fight off the urge to start a collection, because Im as stable as tumbleweed in our 45+ mph winds.

Gotta git'me a bigger ice box
