45/70 and dangerous game
« on: October 03, 2003, 11:17:38 PM »
Hi Everyone,
Since it looks like there will be a wait to order a SS Encore frame for me, as my gunshop has 6 on backorder so far for the last 2 months, I was thinking of getting a 45/70 barrel to shoot a bit in my regular Contender. What I was curious about was the 45/70's performance on dangerous game, such as Alaskan Brown Bear, Grizzley, and the large African Game.
I have read about the taking of all of the big 5 of african game and of the taking of Giant-sized Alaskan Brown bears with a 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun and was curious how you all felt about using a 45/70 contender to hunt the same game.  Is it enough gun? Or would an Encore 375 H&H or 458 Win Mag be so much better?  Thanks for any information.
