Mathews Bows anyone else here have one?
« on: October 04, 2003, 07:18:24 AM »
I have a Mathews legacy bow and think it is the best bow I have owned. I have had Bear, PSE, Ben Person and Martin. Overall performance goes to the Mathews. My son has a PSE but next year he will be getting a Mathews. What do you all think of them? :)

Redhawk 1,
I am going to be buying a new bow this fall and just wondered if you think the mathews is worth the price. There are a lot of bows out there and cost is not a factor for me because I have tried to bargain shop before and always wished I hadn't afterward. If the Mthews bows are REALLY worth the extra cost, I'll probably go for one. Anyone else have any strong opinions on the matter????

I do not own a mathews and personally never will.  I have shot one before though.  I was not impressed.
I think that Hoyt has much over them already.  It will take a lot more than just v lock limbs and solo cams to convince me.
I also don't think they are worth the money.  Redhawk, if you don't mind me asking......How much did you pay for your bare bow mathews?
And you owned all of them bows and I have seen some great companies not listed there.   First off Hoyt!!  then i would say reflex, Kodiak, and AR.
Hoyt makes great youth bows for your youngster.  check out the MT Sport!!!

Mathews has 1 big advantage.  The dead stop draw.  This forces you to draw the same distance every time making you much more consistent of a shooter.  It is on the expensive side not doubt.

I have never owned a Mathews, and have owned 2 Hoyts and a Bear.  I will say this, my next one will not be a Hoyt.  Their customer service IMHO is not much.  My last bow came out with inferior quality strings and cables.  The serving on the string broke within the first 10 shots with the bow, and over the first 3 weeks I owned it, I fought with stretching cables till I couldn't put up with it anymore.  Hoyt refused to replace either the string or the cables.  After replacing them with Zebra strings and cables at my own expense, I got the bow lined out and it shoots good.  I thought they should have made good on their faulty materials.

01magnatec, I paid $699.00 for the Matthews legacy bare bow. I have been shooting it almost every day for the past 8 months, around 200 to 500 shots per day. The bow is very consistent and accurate. And yes I did own all those bows as a matter of fact I owned several of them. I also bought a PSE for my son about a year and a half ago, after he saw my bow and shot it, he wants a Matthews also.

Dogshooter, in my opinion it is well worth the price. One thing Matthews stands behind there bows 100%. Where I bought my bow, the store sells more Matthews bows than any other bow. They carry several different brands, but Matthews is the bow :).

I am sure there are other great bows out there and others have there opinion about them, but in my book I will only buy Matthews. And they look good to. LOL :)

I'm on my second Mathews bow.  I find them to be quiet, accurate and the customer service is excellent (in case you will ever need it).  I know a guy that ran an archery shop and he told me that he never had a mathews bow come back for any reason.
It it hurts when you do that then don't do that.

Hey Dogshooter
Last fall I went to the bowshop for something and picked up a Legacy, shouldn’t have.
Pulled it back, shouldn’t have.
Shot it, really shouldn’t have.
Bought it about three weeks later after looking around and thinking it over.
Was encouraged to buy the other new one that had rounder cam and was longer because I like to shoot both release and fingers.  Have always went that route.  Went for the speed this time and put a Quicktune prong rest on it.  I’ve shot it both ways and I’ve enjoyed it for a year.  I’m now carrying it in the woods. I really like it.
I’ve had Bear, Pearson, Hoyt, and I’ve shot a few others.  When it fits and you’re confident and comfortable with a bow, that’s the one.
Took a minute to hand over the $599 for the bow, but I really like it.  I’d probably go Matthews again.
My bowshop guy says the Legacy has the new model beat.  I don’t know, the Legacy is great for me.

I have had many different bows over the years.  Bear, Hoyt, PSE, Jennings, Browning, American and Darton.  I liked each bow but none lasted with me for more than 2 years.  Not because they were not good bows or did not hold up, but just because there always seemed to be something else out there that I wanted to try.  Then I got a Mathews Conquest.  That was 4 years ago and I would not trade/sell it for any other bow I have seen or shot.  I cannot vouch for any other Mathews as the Conquest is the only one I have had . . . but it is a great bow in every detail.  But if for some reason I had to go with another brand . . . it would be Hoyt.

Over the last twenty years I have owned many bows, Bear, Jennings, Martin, Hoyt, PSE and Matthews. It was about 5 years ago that I bought my Matthews, a Z-Light. It weighs 3.25lbs and shoots like a dream. I shoot it better than any of the other bows. It is also faster.

Many times I have been tempted to buy another Matthews bow. You know, the latest model with all the new bells and whistles. This year I was committed to buying a new Matthews LX. That is until I picked up my Z-Light and started shooting again. This bow is such a pleasure to shoot that I just could not justify wasting the money for ANY new bow.

MATTHEWS - I love mine

I purchased the Mathews LX before the bow season after shooting the Mathews LX, Legacy and Hoyt cam and half.  They were all great shooting bows.  I really liked the Legacy because I shot it with no peep or sight and was still putting arrows right around the bull.  I narrowed my selection down to the LX and Legacy.  I really liked the pull on the LX, very smooth.  It was set at 70 lbs, but was much easier to pull back than my PSE set at 64lbs.  Not the hold wt., but the draw wt.  After a tough decision I went home with the LX and haven't been disappointed.

My friend Rick sells about a thousand Mathews and a thousand Hoyts each year. Each year Hoyt gives him a new bow and Mathews sends him a hat. Good luck hunting!

Mine is a LX. Best I've owned. Most other bows with single cams now use the Matthews technolgy. Says something about their innovations at Matthews.

I bought a mathews legacy the first year they came.  This is the sweetest shooting bow I have ever owned.  I would not hesitate to buy another mathews even with the high price tag.

I have two Mathews- MQ1 and a LX. The MQ1 is lighter and seems quieter, but the LX is very easy to draw and hold, and is just as fast set 7 lbs. lighter. Both bows are very reliable- hardly ever need tuning- something my golden eagle seemed to always need. I bought the LX so i could use the MQ1 as a back up bow, but i shoot them both all the time. Love my Mathews bows!  :D

I've owned several bows over the years.  Bear, Oneida AeroForce, and then the Mathews MQ1.  Believe it or not, I could not get the Mathews to shoot as well as the Oneida, and last year switched back to the Oneida.  My Mathews gets shot in for a backup, but an expensive backup.  Not sure what it is, I see nothing wrong with the MQ1 ... Maybe it is a confidence thing.  I call my Oneida a killing machine ... I've taken over 20 deer with it and it keeps on killing year after year.  The Oneida is by far the smoothest drawing bow I have ever shot.  Many people hate them, but if you have a good one, you'll love it.

I agree with you on the Oneidas.  They may look strange but shoot very well and very forgiving.  Have you checked out the Firebrand Line.  All the benefits of Oneidas without the cam and cable mechanism.  I have an issue with the Matthews offset limb pockets.  My buddy and I were only able to get the Matthews tuned, to our liking,  after having new limb pockets machined to replace the offset ones.  Matthews are all the money and you can get just as much performance and sometimes more for alot less money.  Most all new bows are capable of shooting very well and usually it boils down to the ability of the archer and the setup of the bow.

I shoot a mathews Legacy also. I have owned PSE, High Country, and Hoyt and the Mathews is definatley smoother IMO. I did like the Hoyt and actually would probably still be shooting the Hoyt but got a good deal on the Mathews and the Hoyt has been sitting in the corner since. I just with they would stop bringing out new bows each year. I am now condidering selling my Legacy bare bow and picking up the new Outback.

I do have that Hoyt Magnatech for sale if anyone is interested in upgrading for a complete almost new Hoyt package!

I recently purchased my first Mathews bow.  I got the LX and have never looked back.  It is the smoothest best shooting bow I have ever owned.  I tried many others before buying the LX.  I just couldn't find a better feeling bow for me.  I'll certainly put Mathews at the top of my list the next time I buy a new bow!!

I've got an '03 Legacy. I love it. It was quite a bit different than my old '95 Browning.
It's so much easier and more comfortable to shoot. It made me a much more confident hunter. I have the results to prove it! :-D

I moved up from a PSE Nova to a Methews Icon.  The difference was amazing.  Much smoother, quieter and easier to draw higher weight.  I love the Icon and plan to keep it.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of testing out a Bowtech Justice.  As smooth and quiet as the Icon is, the Justice is that much smoother and quieter.  The draw weight on the Justice is 5# more than the Icon yet it actually feels like it is less than the Icon.  (I measured them both on the same scale on the same day.)  The Justice is faster than the Icon.

One feature of the Mathews bows that I don't like is the grip.  It is broad and round.  It's easy to let a little torque creep into my form.

You can't go wrong with any of the top of the line bows IF you make sure that the bow fits you.  Fit is the first critical thing for archery accuracy.

Good Luck,
Allen

Well after having a Mathews Q2 for about a month, I finally shot it! I had the cam swapped out to my draw length and new cable and string installed as well.  It seems to be a few light years over my old Pearson Bushmaster, that has been problem free since the mid 80's.
The first 6 shots at 10yds. were pretty close to center. I had to turn the string loop to get my peep lined up for a clear sight picture.
The next 6 shots were at 20yds. 4 arrows were nearly touching and the other two were a couple of inches apart.
The next 6 shots were at 30yds. all within 5''. I think our first date was a great one! I believe I'm falling quick though.
With a little sight adjustment, some minor tuning and a lot of practice I think I will be in the game come October.
Do you believe in love at first draw? I'm starting to believe.
Stan

:D Hey there i purposely stayed away from mathews for the simple reason that i shot one and did not like it also the money it takes to outfit one. i settled on a pearson diamondback with the vibx system and fell in love with it i have been shooting it for two years and thought i coild never find something i liked as well but, gues what i did i got to shooting what alse a mathews lx and was i hooked this is the most comfortable smoothest quietest bow i have ever seen i can not believe how much more i love it than my pearson it is without doubt the fastest flatest shooting bow out there i will really be impressed if they can top the lx i cant say enough about it. i get a lot of pleasure from just shooting it and cant wait till the next time i can which will be tommorow.

I bought a Q2 four years ago when they first came out. It is a good bow with what I consider a big drawback and that's if you want to change draw lengths you have to change cams. Last year I bought a bowtech patriot twin cam and all you have to change are modules that cost $17. Now can you imagine having to change cams for a kid that is growing, why it would cost you an arm and leg.
