how often to oil under grip?

i wrote a post similar a while back but can't find it, i was wondering how often i should take my grip off and oil the spring and other metal? i have a blue gp100, and a ss sp101. thanks for any help.

I usually take the grips off my revolvers whenever I clean them.  May not be necessary every time but it only takes a couple seconds, so why not?  Keeps me from getting solvent on the grips or banging them up on the workbench.

The only Ruger revolver I have is a Single six Bisley model but I do have a number of Colts, S&W's and some other old west copy gun
But when ever I fully clean the revolvers I remove the grips and clean the gun.  After clean I spray the whole gun down with T-9 Boeshield (A high tech spray wax.) and then reisntall the grips.
But normally I just do a quick clean and wipe down with the T-9.
Some of the rubber grips on the handguns get soft or are eaten by the spray gun scrubber and that is why I remove them for a full clean.
Also makes the wood grips look a little gray.

Unless you shoot tens of thousands of rounds and drop it in the sand in between, there's never any reason to remove your grips. I haven't the time to clean my Rugers by removing all the grips.

In all my years of shooting and owning guns I've seen I think a grand total of two with rust under the grips both were quite significant really. I am not sure what conditions they were subjected to that caused it but rust can and does happen under there but for sure not very often.

Unless you've subjected them to some pretty severe situations that would be conducive to rust I'd say perhaps a couple times a year max. I sure don't do it nearly that often.

got a single six that ive owned for close to 30 yrs.  been used and put up wet so to speek.  thought that a gun that i love as much as this should have a set of nice grips. changing the grips was the frist time the ruger grips came off that gun, and under the grips look alot newer that the rest of it.

I give the frame area a light oiling only when putting on aftermarket grips, replacements.  If the gun got really wet, like being dropped in a lake, then I could see pulling them off.  The only time I ever saw any rust was on an old Harrington and Richardson revolver, it was a small surface spec on the frame, could have come that way from the factory?  A light buffing and it was just fine on the small spot.

I lived and shot in Southern California and it was hot and dusty.
Sweat would get under the grips as well as the fine dust.
when I would do the annual tear town of the target guns and really clean and lube the guns.
grips get removed.
If you don't shoot enough to need to remove the grips and clean and lube.  OK.
But with a few hundred rounds a month out of the pistol.... I think I do.
Also some of the solvents eat the Rubber, plastic and the varnish.  to keep them pretty I take them off.

Folks should not just assume there is never a need to look. As I recall I've had a TC Contender and a S&W revolver both that had quite extensive rust under the grips but nowhere else on the gun. It can happen but I don't see it as a major concern or reason to take them off each time you clean the gun but then it's also not something to totally ignore and never do either.

When I do a full cleaning I check.
Otherwise I don't pay much attention to it under the grips.
That's usually about once a year for me.
