1911 magazines

I'm new to 1911's.  I just bought an STI Spartan and it came with one magazine.  Can my STI use any 1911 magazine?

It is a 1911 clone so any should do. Contact STI and check it out.

check the gun shows in your area. You should be able to find some GI contract mags for around $7- $9 these work the best for the money. Always look thru the tables that have the most clutter of stuff and dont be afraid to haggle a little

When your at the gun show and haggling over a $7 magazine, I know there is so much profit the dealer is making on that, try that at your local gas station. When gas jumps .20/gal in one day, just tell them, ''Hey, yesterday it was $2.49, today it's $2.69, will ya take $2.00 a gallon if I buy 10 gals?''  gypsyman

I always thought haggling at gun shows was part of the ritual.  Sellers as well as buyers always seem to enjoy the parry.  The sellers around here price to haggle or they tell you quickly that they will not discount the item in question.

The last gun I bought at a gun show the guy offered to take 50 bucks off the price before I even asked for a discount. :D

I usually like to run oem mags in my guns. That being said I do have a few wilson combat mags.

They function flawlessly in all my .45s

Get some Wilson or Shooting Star mags, it will save you a lot of cussing down the road. ;)

I like Chip McCormick Plus mags.  They've been good for me, just a little more than the base clones, and last FOREVER.

Skarke,

Sorry buddy.....don't mean to flame you or anything, but McCormick mags are crap. If you want top notch 1911 magazines pay the price and buy Wilson Combat. Wilson Combat are REAL 1911 magazines that will in fact last you for years, even when you run a few thousand rounds a summer through them.

I can tell you that the McCormick's will at best, last you 4,000 rounds before the feed lips fail because of metal fatigue. Then you will have nothing more than FTF with them. Oh yes, you will read all you can about cleaning 'em, and you will buy the replacement spring.....and the first few times out you will even tell yourself how good they work.....while ignoring the 2 or 3 FTF issues you had.

Spend the bucks. Buy the good stuff.

  I have had good luck with Mecgars for my Kimber. I like the bumper on the 8rd mags but you can get them without. 17.60 each at Midsouth Shooters supply online. Mine feed good and the bumper has a nice shape to it so I can rest my off hand little finger on it. It doesn't bite my finger like others do.

To me the proper functioning of the mag is the quality of the spring thats inside it.  Thanks the only thing that can really wear out first.  After all we leave these mags loaded for many days/ months and even years right?

At first the cheap $7/ or 5 mags for what ever specials worked great and still do work.  Now I'm reading that the cheap after market no name mags suck.  I have two new chippy mags but haven't shot them yet.  But with most posters here who shoot many 1,000's of round say to go with the good mags(higher priced stuff).

For me being the common 1911 owner(average 1911 dummy) i try a new mag out to see if it works, then it goes in the mag backup line up if i'm sure its good enough to put my life on the line with.  Lets face it, it has to be really reliable and dependable so i mainly stay with the orginal mag as my first line defence.  Now the life span of the mag depends on how much we unload it and switch to the other mags to give the springs a break.  I really don't think the mag failure is from use its from leaving them loaded for long periods of time that weakens the springs inside them.  I also give my mags a cleaning, coat the spring with a very little moly on the coils plus a shot of CLP.  Running them dry isn't good either. Just a little lube can keep the wear gremlin away for a longtime.

I see so many used guns and i look at the recoil springs and just shake my head at seeing the  wear that could be prevented by a drop of lube or a tad of moly.  Don't let your springs wear out before there time.

+1 to that.  For everything I've tried them in, MecGar mags work as good or better than the original ones.  I highly recommend them.
