Walk On Hunts for Deer, Antelope , Elk in Wyoming
« on: September 09, 2009, 02:00:33 PM »
I have been making the trip from NW Ohio to Eastern Wyoming since the year 2000, I have not hunted Elk there yet but have taken mule deer , whitetails & LOTS of antelope there all on walk on land and state land.  Walk on land is private land that the owner has a agreement with the state to allow hunters to be able to hunt species that the landowner wants without a permission slip, a great deal !!  The reason I am posting this is that there are alot of guys  and gals out there that would like to hunt these animals on a budget and without paying high tresspass fees. Myself and several of my friends think this is the best deal going for a low cost DIY big game hunt.  We hunt in the Douglass / Lusk area and the game is plentiful and the are 10s of thousands of acres of land to hunt for free There is some CWD reported in the deer and Elk in the area but we have never found any animals with it yet , and if you are a meat hunter like myself you can get 4 deer tags and 4 antelope tags if you shoot Does & Fawns. The price for non resident reduced price deer and antelope doe tags is $ 34.00  The residents out there are generally very friendly and the area is somewhat desolate but beautiful . I am leaving to go out there the end of this month for the 10 th year, I think its a great place to hunt and you might too.    Jedman.

We hunted in the Douglas area 7 years ago and filled all our tags.  Had a wonderful trip although deer were scarce.
We leave tomorrow for the Newcastle area for antelope hunting in Unit 7.  We will be camping on BLM land and hunting the National Grasslands.  There are also some walk on ranches in this unit that we may get to try if time permits.
Total budget for this hunt including driving from Pa. with 2 trucks and 6 hunters is $700.00 round trip including licences, food, fuel, and a stop at Wall Durg and Mt. Rushmore.  We return home on the 12th.

This is a great tip!!! I hunted walk on land near Casper for antelope and had a good hunt. In 2007 I hunted walk on land between Gillette and Buffalo for deer. I hunted a different area each day and saw deer. It's a nice way to add more places to hunt. It keeps the costs down but I spent my cash on Hotels. Guess I'm getting tired of camping.

My / Our trip to Wyoming this year was great as allways, There was 3 of us hunting and we shot 11 antelope in 41/2 days of hunting.  Deer are way down in numbers and not a good bet in the area i am hunting. We had type 7 licenses that were good in antelope units 9 and parts of 11 & 12 for doe / fawn antelope.  This year we only shot 3 of our 11 on walk on land because we met a rancher that was just a few minutes from where we were staying and he was happy to let us fill all our tags on his land for free.
The ranchers that have cattle seem to be glad to let you take all the antelope you want since they are competing for the grass with there cows. Anyway the population of antelope is at a high point now and this year they had good rain fall and should be great for some time to come. Cant wait till next year !!

In Western Wyoming, there is ALOT of public land, alot of 2 track trails. I shot my buck deer, as he and a twin were stepping out of the woods onto a 2 track after a rain, sleet, foggy morning. My timing was perfect, though I really hadn't much to do with, It was Ma weather. There are "flatter" areas that are designated Hunter Management areas, all walk in areas, where you apply for a permit slip online and get it without hesitation.

Sounds like a great idea. The tags are getting so hard to get here in Arizona, you could go for years without getting drawn. That might be an option I look into next year. Thanks for the info. Only about a 24 hour drive for me,besides,it great country.

How do you find out where the walk on lands and other public lands are located? Are there some on line resources to investigate? I would love to do something like this, but I wouldn't want to head out there cold. Would like to research areas to hunt ahead of time, just don't know how to go about it.

You can go to the Wyoming Game and Fish website. They also put out pamplets with the areas and the locations. But the online source is more accurate, because  a landowner can withdraw his land for walk on access right before a hunt, though it seldom happens. I've only seen it happen once in the last 6 yrs or so.

Ive read that over the counter tags apply to residents on, not non residents. The article said nr must apply for a drawing for tags.Is this the straight scoop?

Yes, pretty much all, except maybe left over antelope tags. So now's the time to get cracking if interested. i think the areas a NR applies for in the lottery is actually a section, encompassing several areas in a particular part of the state.
