Opinions of the Lyman #429640 bullet for hunting
« on: September 11, 2009, 02:00:46 AM »
I bought 100 of these cast bullets with the idea to use them for Deer hunting , they would be loaded in 44 spl. cases and be shot from a 18 " rifle at about the same velocity most are getting from a 44 mag handgun.  They have a hollow point and weigh about 250 grs. My question is do they expand at say 1000 fps ( at point of impact ) ?
I would like to here opinions from people who have shot game with this bullet,  likes / dislikes  Thanks

if your bullets are wieghting out at 250 grain there probably cast out of a fairly hard alloy. What will likely happen is you will loose the nose of the bullet when it hits. Ive shot game as big as a 1100 lb buffalo with that bullet at about the same weight and it killed well and acted very simular to a nos partition. It lost its nose and the remainder of the bullet exited the far side. When I  hunting deer with it i  cast it out of 5050 ww/pure. It weights around 260 casted out of that alloy and is soft enough to mushroom and ductable enough to not fracture. Anything larger and i like it cast at about 12bhn and alow it to work like was stated. I have a buddy who guides pig hunters and i gave him a coffee can full of them cast out of ww with tin added and he swears by them. Says they knock a cork out of a pig. He had problems with hard cast non hp bullets not killing fast enough and was conserned about liability if one cut up a hunter. It is a very accurate bullet and if casted with the proper alloy for the intended use is a devistating  ;)  bullet

Thanks Llyod,   I should have weighed one before posting they were around 250 grs.  I weighed a couple and they average about 261 grs.     Jed   :D
