The evils of Kraft Barbecue Sauce
« on: September 11, 2009, 03:02:30 AM »
I've been a happy customer of Kraft barbecue sauce for as long as I can remember but they recently switched the recipe so it tastes pretty bad. I don't like it at all. This applies to all of the varieties of it I have tried. As with Heinz ketchup I always loved the stuff and never saw a reason to change because it was so good. But since they gave it the "new and improved" flavor, we make our own barbecue sauce. Frankly ours, which my son formulated, is better than Kraft ever was, so I doubt we'll be going back to Kraft even if they go back to the old recipe.

There is no such thing as best. We're all individuals and what tastes we prefer differ person to person.

Regional barbecue sauces are as common as flies on... well there are a lot of them. We have a local honey company that puts their product in the sauce and I do like it along with several others.

GB is right about the individual tastes. I'm sure there's some focus group that prefers the new Kraft stuff. After all, Hunts (gag!) still makes a popular ketchup, which some people prefer to the finest ketchup known to man, Heinz.

Stubbs makes a good marinade, don't know where it is sold, but is sold at
Wally-World in TX.
Bar-B-Q changes east and west of the Mississippi. East is pork mostly dry rub
west is beef mostly marinaded and mopped. I can not remember having
bad B-B-Q some i like better than others, but didn't turn any down that i
can remember. ;D

When Donna was alive, she was always donating groceries to single moms through the womans center. I helped her deliver them.
One time a young woman gave Donna a jar of home made BBQ sauce. It was not ketchup based and was the best I ever had. Wish I could find the recipe. Funny how some things bring back memories.

KC Masterpiece became my favorite a good 20 years ago and I've used it more or less exclusively ever since.  If I feel the need for a change of pace I grab a bottle of Williamsons.  But I think that's a local brand.  It uses a different base then KC does.

Here in NC its a vinegar based mop sauce. I make my own.  I recently tried some Sweet Baby Rays and I have to admit it was some pretty good stuff.

Trader Joes is worth a 180 mile round trip into Phoenix.  Kansas city style, I convoy down with some of my neighbors and load up by the case.

Boy that comment sure hit the nail on the head.  Personally, I like Sweet Baby Ray's but it's a little TOO sweet for me, I usually add a little vinegar to it. Oftentimes I'll just make my own.
It seems like most people like the tomato based sauces, is anyone into the mustard/vinegar types?

When I don't have (or take) the timer to make my own it's KC Masterpiece.  It's hard to beat.

Here is the best receipt and I won't kill you if you make it,
Equal portions of Worstishire, KC, Heinze---set it aside to mairnate.
While waiting for it to collect--sprikle meat liberally with salt and pepper and rub in.
Put it on the grill---take marinate and throw it in the trash.
For Brisket---white vinegar.
For all other BBQ Pork---works the same.
Blessings

Wont buy nothing made by Heinz! for reasons previously stated.  I always doctor any sauce i use to my personal taste. dont like the vinegar based stuff!  One of these days i might make my own but dont use it much anyway! I like the taste of grilled and smoked meats just as it comes off the pit! like briskit and ribs!

Try Hunt's BBQ Hickory & Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce, it's the best.
