L61R Finnbear vs Sako 75 Hunter
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:21:34 PM »
I have decided that I want to buy a Sako as my next hunting rifle.  Here are the deals I have found, both are 7mm Mag:

Sako L61R Finnbear w/ Leupold vari III scope  $875-Both rifle and scope are early 80s vintage and have had approx 400 rnds shot.

Sako 75 Hunter w/ Leupold Vari-X II $875- Rifle has had less than 100 rnds shot.

Both rifles are in great condition.  I value a smooth action and accuracy.  Which would be a better choice?  I have felt a Sako 75 but not a Finnbear.  Is the age of the Finnbear something to consider or is that not an issue?  Thanks for any help.

Personally I'd rather have an older one than a newer one. Far better quality in my opinion.

I doubt if you could go wrong either way.  I have a preferance for Sako rifles (save up long times to buy them).  If you really like the 7mm caliber there are tons of used Sakos out there in that and 06 calibers to choose from.

If the Finnbear is in really good shape I would go that way.  I don't know if it is necessarily better than the 75 but older rifles of that quality are great to have.

I don't know much about the Finnbear but I do have a 75 Hunter in 243, very nice gun. Like the other said, a winner either way.

I have a Deluxe Finnbear that I got used from a guy back in the 80s.  He had 20+ boxes of commercial ammo with it too. The rifle shoots well with heavy bullets preferring the 180 of just about any manufacturer, placing those at sub MOA.  The lighter bullets would not group well at all, sometimes 2-3 inches at best.  I even still have the light stuff that I never fired after those first few times to the range.  A beautiful rifle, very well made, and nice trigger.  Pre Garcia imports tend to command more dollar.

Flip a coin as far as the rifle.Better scope on the Finnbear, what about the rings/mounts.They cost some coin if they are Optilocks.I have a 75 in 7mmRM,built like a tank.
