Where are the squirrels??
« on: October 05, 2003, 10:19:33 AM »
have found a place that is an old river oxbow in the middle of agricultural crop land. It is grown up with large oak and hickory, and seems to get little pressure except from duck hunters. The problem is I am finding the ground littered with bushels of huge hickory nuts, but few squirrels. What is the deal? Too much mast to concentrate them yet? Too many leaves to see them yet? I am thinking about waiting till the leaves fall and cover up the mast on the ground. The squirrels should be easier to see as they rummage around in the leaf litter looking for grub. Any other advice?

i watch for leaf movement when the leaves are on the trees. when trees are bare, they seem to be more skitish. listen for cuttings too

I've seen some stands that had huge oaks but had been recently thinned.  The brush and briars took off making it real thick down low on the ground.  Not many squirrels.  I think when the ground cover gets too thick the squirrels get hit by ground predators (cats, fox, weasles).

Not that, that's the case, but I thought I'd offer it.

It could be too many leaves yet, but i doubt it...Squirrels are one of the loudest game animals I have ever hunted(movement wise)... You can usually tell if there is squirrels in the area within at least 10 minnutes, it depends if u SITorWALK. I would go in there find a nice big oak, and sit and wait for atleast 15 minnutes. If u dont see anything, mabye the squirrels arent active there? I live in PA and tommorrow is the first day for squirrel and grouse...wish me luck, Good luck to u :D :biggun:
