45-70 & Hodgdon Benchmark Powder
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:12:17 PM »
I've run out of 4198 and the local dealer has very little powder in stock. Most internet sellers don't seem to have much powder on hand either. I have a few pounds of Benchmark which I bought for the .223. It would be in the right range as far as burn rate but I've never heard of anyone using it.

Do any of you guys use Benchmark in the 45-70 with 300gr-400gr bullets?

Hodgdon lists it with 300 to 400-grain bullets.  It is considerably slower than H4198 or IMR4198 but gives very decent velocities.
