Question for Lloyd?
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:20:20 AM »
Lloyd I have posted some relpies on here about a good set of mounts for my 50th anniversary blackhawk flattop 44 mag. And havn't got many responces concerning what I needed, so I figured I'd ask you since you enjoy single actions so much.  I called weaver for their mounts but said the wouldn';t fit the flattop frame.  So could you give me any advice on the leupold or weigand bases.  I know I will have to drill and tap the gun for these mounts.  But should the bases fit the flattop frame?  Thanks for any of your advice.

I dont use scopes on my sixguns so i really cant help you with any recomendations. I had a b square no gunsmith mount on a super years ago and it held zero for me but some people have had problems with them.

As you are no doubt now figuring out if you need a scope you've made a very poor choice in guns. Your real best option is to trade it on something that is easier to scope. Such guns just ain't really intended to be scoped and few folks with them will want to scope them thus the folks who run the scope mount industry don't waste their time coming up with mounts that are unlikely to ever sell. Just a matter of economics.

Yeah lol i'm finding out that there ain't many options out there, but since I killed that hog with it a while back i'm hooked. I really like it with open sights but the sights on it are kinda hard for me to see.  At 25 yards I can shoot some great groups with it but at 50 yards i'm having problems seeing them. I'm only 23 and have very good eyesite, but it may just be the sights they don't have a line on them they are the same blue finish as the barrel.  I own several other pistols i play with like a 4'' python and a 1911.  But I bought this gun purely to deer and hog hunt with on our smaller fields and thickets.  I'll always have a rifle with me just in case lol. I've heard alot of people talking about the weigand bases but even though i bought it to use and not keep put up, it still hurts to think of drilling holes in it lol.  Thanks for the replies guys.

sorry but i just wont drill on a sixgun. I would do like greybeard suggested and either keep in and shoot it as is and buy a differnt gun to scope or sell it and buy something like a ruger hunter that is set up from the factory for scope mounting.

i think brownells sells them. I personaly think the best sight for low light is a thin black blade that allows light on each side of it in low light. Colored front sights dont add but a few minutes if that of advantage and they dont work well in bright light for me so i dont bother with them. One nice option but a realitively expensive one is i had dave clements put a trinium insert in the sight on the custom 4570 marlin he did for me. It works great. Fiber optics add a few more minutes then colored sights do but are just to frajile for a hunting gun.

Try a set of fiber optics on your sixgun, they show up real good.

Yeah -- for 50-75 yards, I think better iron sights might be your answer.  When I first started revolver shooting my vision wasn't so hot (I have since had the magic surgery).  I didn't have any trouble getting hunting accuracy out to about 85 yards, but the sights had red inserts on the ramps...

Our eye sight is quite different person to person and what one of us can see well and use well another might not be able to see or use at all. For me red ramp sights ala S&W are next to impossible to shoot accurately. Like Lloyd I prefer a flat faced patridge type blade not too thick for accurate iron sight shooting.

Anything else reduces my ability to accurately place bullets. Still for low light hunting situations fiber optic sights do help you to see them thus might help in bullet placement for hunting. To me an ideal sight might be a thin patridge blade sight with a combo fiber optic tritium night sight insert like I think it is Tru-Glo makes. I don't think such is available but to me that likely would be the best possible hunting sight for all light conditions.

When I used to work with a gunsmith, we did sight inserts.  The most popular was a bright green, stood out against most backgrounds better than red.  I personnely have been a fan of fingernail polish, it can be easally removed and they have some really bright almost floresant colors.  I get wierd looks when buying it thow as the wife doesn't use it. 8)

I have written Wiegand regarding a base for the new Flattops. We are in the middle of exchanging Emails. If I learn anything definitive, I'll post that information.

Thirty years ago, way before S&W started drilling and tapping their revolvers, I wanted a hunting scope on my Model 29 (8 3/8" barrel). I wanted to mount the scope in between the sights for a "barrel heavy" installation and to allow me to remove the scope and use the iron sights if necessary (busted scope or bad weather). I had seen a picture of one that Bill Wilson was offering his customers. I bought a 12" blank base from Kimber (later became Warne rings) and a set of rings. I had a local precision machine shop install the bases (after he milled them to my specs) with 8x40 screws. 8x40 screws have twice the shear strength of 6x48 screws. I have put over ten thousand rounds through that combination and have had absolutely NO problems.

Brownell's has blank Weaver style bases in both aluminum and steel (the steel will have to be blued). You could do the same thing with your Ruger, that I did with my S&W.

Another possibility is to contact SSK regarding a mount:

http://www.sskindustries.com/handgun.htm

SSK has a dandy scope mount (Tough SOB) that I believe they can install for you.

If I were doing it today, I would opt for a good Red Dot sight. They are much lighter than a scope (lighter means less recoil problems) and work extremely well in both bright and dim light.

FWIW

fingernail polish,

I had forgotten that -- model paint works good too.  Used to use that years ago, flat black front sights have never worked well for me but any bright color seems fine.  Looks funny on a single action though...
