22-250 bullet for ultra varmint fluted.
« on: September 15, 2009, 04:26:46 PM »
I am just curious what bullet weights people are using successfully? I am reloading with a 40 gr. nosler ballistic tip but I am not getting the groups I want. Is my bullet too light? I worked up a few loads but haven't exactly tried them out yet.

Do you think that the 40gr Ballistic tips are too light to be accurate?

Doesn't really answere your question but I have been using Remington UMC 45gr HP factory load in my standard handy with good results.
Groups run just under 1".
This is the VALUE PACK 40 round box of 22-250 ammo in the yellow box from Remington UMC.

Now, I don't have this caliber in a Handi, but have owned 4-5 22-250's and loaded for twice that many thru the years. I haven't seen one that wouldn't shoot a 52-53Gr bullet, match primer charged with 38grs of H380 powder. (I do not normally offer load data, as mistakes and miss quotes happen and I wouldn't want anyone to be hurt form my mistakes, BUT this H380 powder was DEVELOPED for the 22-250 and the name IS the best loading for it!!)  As always, load 10% below and work up in your rifle. But I'll wiling to bet, you will find its good in yours as well.

Good info. Thanks a bunch. I've already loaded a few rounds with H380 but haven't had a chance to fire any off. Thanks for the help guys. I'll keep you updated.

My Ultra has a preference for 50 and 55 grain bulets - I shoot mostly Hornady fodder in mine Vmax and SPSX (kept to lower fps) with accuracy. I use H 335 and Varget. It does not like the 35 or 40 grain Vmax bullets and puts them in 1 1/2 or larger group with a 20X scope at 100 yds from bench which is not acceptable to me in that rifle. 50 and 55 Vmax's are in the .75 MOA area if I do my part and wind is light.
