I have been back in martial arts full time for the last few months. I have been blessed with the opportunity to compete at a national tournament in Salem Winston North Carolina this Saturday. I am still struggling a little with some of the moves in my form, but I think I am ready for the sparring competition. This tournament is set up a little different than the ones I have been to in the past. It is two minute rounds and a kick or punch to the body is worth a point and a technique to the head is worth two points and a jump adds a point. Whoever has the most points at the end of two minutes wins that round and goes on to the next round. Championship match is 3 and 1/2 minutes. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I have never left the kids for a whole weekend before, but I am confident that Matt can manage while I am away. Wish us luck!!!!

Please try to get some pictures and post them here as many of us will probably not be able to make it to the event.

If my family and I lived in the Winston/Salem area, I'd take my daughter out to watch and cheer for you. Tried to get her to start karate lessons awhile back, but she wanted to go to dance school instead.

girl you go gettum...i can t promise but i might even try an get up there,,if i knew where it was at..
if you would rather i wait until you get back in your stride ,,id understand that...
i don t know if it would do for me to see somebody hit you anyway...that might be rough on my nerves as you are the pleasantness representative on this forum... just my opinion.. win or lose i know you gonna make a good showing ..slim

The tournament is at the Marriott Hotel in Winston-Salem! Slim if you get by there I am competing at 3:30 Friday!

Good Luck Heather. You will only be about 20 miles from the house. I would love to come watch you compete, but betweem work and my Granddaughters cheerleading, I will be tied up until 2 or 3 pm Saturday.

ok heather not promising as the wife is having some health problems.... but i like to go a little on weekends...so if you hear an ole fart over there somewhere hollering ata girl ..you will know i made it..
i do hope you got some family or friends going with you...a little moral support was nice for me in those situations.. don t get hurt an don t hurt the other person to much...yall don t hit each other in the collar bone now.

Well....I didn't come in last. I got fifth in forms and got knocked out my first round of sparring. It was a close match. One judge scored it a tie and the other two gave it to her. I am now familar with how the tournament is ran and am ready to kick some a$$ in Orange beach Al in November!

TaeKwonDo literally translates into art of hand and foot. It is a korean artform. It is more kicking and punching focusing on kicks.

Tai Chi literally translates into art of breath. It is a Chinese artform. It is a slow moving art that focuses on mastering one's inner energy for self defense.

Judo is a grappling art.

Aikido is a japanese art that focuses on pressure points takedowns and grappling.

JiJitsu- is another grappling art that focuses on choke holds, arm bars, wrist breaks, pressure points, and escapes.

The way I judge a school isn't how new the equipment is or how many trophies are on the wall or even how big it is or how many students there is. The best way to get a gauge of how good the school is how good the students are. If you see black belts that can't kick to their own waist then the school is a bogus money making school and the testings are crap and you are spending a whole lot of money to get a belt and not learn a form of art. Find out what contact level they practice, test, and compete at. If it is full contact you want you don't want most big schools. It there is a Taekwondo America school in your area I would recommend that. It is medium contact with sparring gear. We are allowed to kick and punch the crap out of each other and that is kinda cool!
