567 Yard shot
« on: September 17, 2009, 05:39:06 AM »
Had a blind set up on the side of a mountain.  567 Yards corrected for a 22 deg angle, to the nearest gut pile.  Actual yardage was just over 600 yards.

First day:  2 Wolves came in and were checking the gut pile.  Used the Handi 30-06 and took a shot.  Missed.  Had four Bull Moose come out into the open after sundown.  Two little paddle heads, one about mid 30s, and one in the low 50s.  The bigger one was a shooter, but he never approached closer than 700 yards corrected.  Too far for the Handi.

Second day:  Early morning before sunrise saw one Bull over 60 inch, over 1000 yards, too far for our range finders to range.  Saw seven cows during the morning.  Saw one wolf way up the river on the bank, it never showed itself again.  Then right at sundown a Grizzly came walking up the river bank.  When it smelled the gut pile it turned and ran into the spruces.  It then circled around and came back out into the meadow way down wind.  It then went to the gut pile and started feeding.  I knew the Handi did not have the horse power for a Grizzly at that range, plus I had already missed a wolf at that range.  Picked up the Weatherby .338/378.  Settled down and took the shot.  Hit the bear right behind the shoulder, good lung shot.  Shot was a complete pass through, hitting both lungs.  Bear turned and started running.  Took a shot aiming at the spine as the bear ran away from my position.  Missed the spine by 2", but that shot made the Grizzly roll.  Grizzly sat up, I aimed at the neck.  Shot broke the neck, killing it instantly.

Need to go work on the Handi, should not have missed the wolf.  Have a new Burris scope 4X12X40.  I am thinking I need to practice more on using that scope, and reading the Ballistic Plex reticle, and assure the load meets the markings.  Shooting a new 200gr Nosler Partition loading.

OK some asked about the stats of the cartridge I am shooting so I will post it here.

.338/378 Weatherby Cartridge, 103 grs of IMR 7828, 250gr Nosler bullet, WLR Winchester primers.  This load cronyed at 3210 FPS.  I worked this load up myself, and it is above the Max loads found in the Nosler manual, so I do not recommend anyone try this load with working up to it gradual looking for pressure signs.

By the way the Weatherby Accumark is right out of the box.  Nothing done to it except adding the Night Force scope.

The guy that built the blind we were using uses a Weatherby Accumark in 30/378, also with a night Force scope.  He shoots Moose from the blind on out to 700 yards.

Here are pictures of the valley we were hunting in and pictures of the hide.  I got to the tanney too late Thursday morning to see the hide before the head was skinned out.  by the time I got there the skinner had skinned it out and salted the hide.  The skinned head was in the freezer so it would not spoil before they could clean it down to the skull.

The salted hide

The right paw and claws

The valley we ere in from the blind.  The spot the bear was in is the little clearing off to the left above the lake.  Not the clearing around the lake, the little clearing off by itself above and to the left of the lake.  Wish I knew how to put an arrow on the photo.  Rog

;) Very long shot....  :o :o Is this style of hunting common in Alaska????? When I was a kid, there were a bunch of long range shooters that knocked deer of at up to 1200 yards..... Always fascinated me.  ;D I haven't taken any big game at much more than 650, but did get a coyote at 882 one time. Quite a thrill...... ;D :D ;)

It is more common than admitted to.  Many of the older crowd have quietly over the years learned how to shoot at these distances.  They find a valley where visibility is good and set up a good location to shoot from.  They go there year after year and it produces a good supply of animals.  The locations and ranges are a closely guarded secret, if it gets out the area will be overrun by people and it's productivity will be overtaxed.

That's why I live in Paradise.

When I was a small kid, one of the first articles I remember reading was written by Fred Bear.  He wrote about hunting Moose, Caribou, and Grizzly Bear on the Wood River in Alaska.  After he got his Moose, Caribou, or Grizzly, he then went out and shot Grouse with his bow.  Now I do that when I have shot my Moose, only I use a shotgun, I'm not that good with my bow anymore.  At the time I was reading those articles I thought it would be wonderful to live near the Wood River, so I could live that type of life always.  Today I live in the area.  The Wood River runs through the Tanana Flats.  The Tanana Flats is just across the Tanana River from North Pole, where I live.  I hunt that area several times every year.  It is a very productive area, and I love going over there.  Sometimes I just go over there alone to explore, and enjoy the scenery and the solitude.

;) Sourdough, many years ago, probably close 30 my wife and I spent 2 mths in Alaska. It was and I suppose still is beautiful country. But at that time, the big hassel seemed to be getting out far enough to do anything.  :-[ It seemed like either a plane or boat was required. Now with the advent of 4 wheelers and snow machines it looks like that has changed. I love varmit hunting, and as I remember the game orders, everything was either a furbearer or game animal so there was little varmit shooting. How do you spend your spare time when hunting game is out of season or you have enough meat. ???? It seems to me you mentioned one time about loading a real bunch of .223's?????   ;) ;)

Hunting season started 10 August for Caribou, and Dall Sheep.  Also for Wolves and Coyotes in some areas.  Moose and Grizzly started 1 September.  Then 1 November Trapping season starts.  Shooting is one method of taking animals under a trapping license.  Black Bear never closes.

I call Wolves, Coyotes, and foxes, during the winter.

Sourdough,
Great shot and story to go with it. A lot of us hunters can only dream about living and hunting in Alaska. Thanks for sharing it and the photos of hunters paradise. Just out of curiosity, where did you live before heading North?
