44 mag cast bullets speed?
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:21:26 AM »
I'm fixing to go and pick up some cast bullets for my 44 mag.  Don't know what grain i'm gonna get yet but it will be between 250 and 300,and they'll be plain base no gas checks.  I don't know how hard they will be they are only for practice before I start my heavy loads.  I have universal clays, green dot, and some magnum powders.  What do you usually need to keep the velocity of these bullets too to keep from excessive leading? thanks

 You didn't say what you are going to shoot these in ??
Leading can be caused by one or more reasons in a pistol;
1. improper fit to the cylinder throat
2. alloy to hard or to soft for the load used

Check to  online loading manuals for loading data with the powders you have

Sorry wayne they are for a ruger blackhawk 44 mag.  they were 240 gr SWC. without gas checks but they are hard cast not swaged.  The base of the bullets look kinda like boatail rifle bullets is this bevel base?  Anyways they shot great much better than the 240 gr. xtps I have been using.  I loaded them with green dot, universal, and 2400, all with cci lp primers.  Leading was almost virtually nonexistet.  The only data i could find for 2400 was for 250gr keith bullets and it called for 20.0 grs of 2400. for like 14oo fps I may be wrong my manual is not with me.  So I loaded them to 18gr. of 2400. Thinking of going up .5 to 1 gr. in the 2400.  I'm looking at maybe using these for hogs and deer since they are harder than I thought they would be, and I got 500 of them for 35 bucks.  If I was to load it to around 1000 to 1200 fps would this stilll make a good deer and hog load with the 240 gr?  Thanks for all the advice.

The  load EK used and is still used by some today ir 22.0 2400 with a LPP, NOT Mag. PP. and the RCBS # 1 cast bullet manul lists the 22.0/2400  for their 250 KT bullet @ 245 gn in a 44 mag rifle.
As to your hunting, work up till you have the most accurate load at the longest distance you feel cumfortable shooting at. Off hand or from a make shift rest in a tree stand I'ls say test at  50 to 75 yards so you can put your hits in kill areas.
On either animal your bullets should pass through the animal unless it hits a major bone or joint at around 1200 FPS  which should be close to 20.0/2400
 Google "44 Mag. load"  and see what you come up with
