I see used Ruger Rifles reasonably often. I have a No.1 in 6mmRem
Have you considered rebarreling the rifle?

I understand .... I just think the 788 is a very good rifle and don't want to see it thrown away!

I too have a 788 6mm.  I passed on two ruger mk II's a few years ago, two shops near me had them pretty cheap. I like the mkII better than the tang safety, but alas after looking on gunbroker I have determined that ruger made 643 million mkI's in 6mm.

I have told myself many times just to bite the bullet and get a 243 who cares whats the difference la de da but I still carry the torch for the 6mm.
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

i know, I have 3 243's, just bought a Savage in 243. I had 2 new 788's when they first came out, a 6mm and a 22-250, sold them when the bolt handle snapped off trying to eject a 22-250 handload........found this one a few years ago, shot well for  awhile.........I'll mess with it and see if I can improve it......

Since I make no attempt to keep up with them I can't be sure but I think Ruger still chambers their M77 and #1 in the round. I long wanted one and finally picked up a Ruger #1B in it as it was all I could find. It wouldn't even keep the shots on an 8.5x11 target sheet.

Cooper chambers it and gurantees three shots in a half inch at 100 yards. I'm not sure if Kimber chambers it or only the .243 but if you want light their rifles qualify.

Other than those I think you'll need to look at used or have one barrelled to the round by a smith.

Some of the T/C custom barrel makers offer the 6mm.

Ponca,
Have ya tried soaking that barrel with a good bore cleaner? I've seen a bunch of "shot out" barrels. Most of them have needed a really good cleaning. Get a plug for the chamber, fill 'er up with a good copper solvent, let her sit for an hour or so, dump out the solvent and go to town with a good stiff brush. The last one I played with took about 5 nites worth of scrubbing to get it entirely clean. That ole Savage levergun shot like a dream after having I don't kow how many years worth of crud(copper and powder) cleaned out of it.

Hi Ponca.  The 6MM is one of my favorite calibers and one of the best shooting calibers I have ever handled.  I have an old Remington Mohawk that was given to me long ago by a friend for some work on his house.  It has an old Weaver 2 x 7 widefield scope and it has killed many deer and one antelope.  I put it up and don't shoot it for a year and it still shoots dime sized groups in the same spot as before with no recoil.  It will shoot a gnats rear vent out at 100 yards in a hurricane.  Needles to say, I have great confidence in this rifle.  I wish all my rilfe shot near this good.  Hope you enjoy yours.  Blowtorch
