Hardees as road food
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:16:30 PM »
I  stopped for dinner at Hardees. It's rare that I go to such a place, but this time I wanted fries and a burger. You know, it's really quite good, and reasonably priced too. They did a re-invention of themselves a few years back, and I must say the result is commendable. Yes, it's still made-by-teenagers-fast-food, but it's certainly worthy of your consideration. Compared to Hardees, both Burger King and McDonalds are both very poor.

Coincidentally there's a news story today about McDonalds selling new "gourmet" hamburgers. That word gourmet must have meant something good a long time ago, but when it's associated with Mc Food Like Substances, you know the essential meaning has changed.

I didn't realize the Hardee's franchise had spread widely enough to reach up your way Rudy. I am not certain but think they began many many long years ago here in the deep south. I don't recall ever seeing one in my travels outside the deep south.

They flame broil their burgers over an open flame and in the beginning over charcoal. Now in those days they were some kinda good. I still think they are the best of the fast food burgers when the restaurant is run properly but down here they are about done due to the way the stores were run. They've pretty much become a black enterprise run by two or three young blacks with no one else in the place down here. Of all the many that used to be in Calhoun County I'm aware of only one left now and it's not even open half the time when I go for a burger there. Sad really as they were once the best of them down here but have slipped badly of late. These days Burger King is where I go for a burger. I've been boycotting Mc D for over 30 years.

Bill, Hardees has been in MN for many years. Sadly most of the hardees here are now closed. I think they were by far the best of the fast food chains. A mushroom swiss burger is hard to beat.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

McD's only REAL hamburger is the new 1/3 #'er---an angus burger----and it is pretty good.
I have not seen a Hardee's in Houston for awhile and don't ever recall eating at one, so I can't brag or complain. Maybe they are around---Idunno.
What-a-burger is the best of the chain operations around here.
Windy's is close and BK is somewhere in the middle of the mix.
O YEAH----IMO.

GB:
Hardees has been in MN for a long time, but I thought they were going to go out of business because they seemed to have lost their identity as a restaurant and couldn't figure out what to sell. They fixed that, and remodeled the stores. Not it's pretty darn good.

WilliamLayton:
I'll have to try one next time I'm in the mood. They do have good breakfasts. I tried that steak bagel a couple of times. First time was too rich for me, so the next time I asked them to make it without the cheese and butter sauce. That was quite good. Egg McMuffin is still my favorite though.

I'm not a fan of fast food restaurants and rarely eat at them.   When working I generally brown bag it and when traveling I prefer to stop at a local Mom & Pop diner or a good pub.   They are often not much more expensive than the fast food joints, the food is much more palatable and some one waits on you and refills your drink when it's empty.

+1
I have been boycotting them for at least 10 years since my daughter and I both got sick
from their lousy egg mc muffins. Their support of La Raza alone is reason enough for me
to never eat there again. If I want a great burger I'll go to In-And-Out. The Carl's Jr's
out here have so-so food that is way overpriced. I don't eat there.

It is a strange thing that hardees introduced breakfast to the industry and as soon as carls bought them the breakfast that built hardees was the first thing to go. But then carl's has gone bankrupt at least three times.

There biscuits are still the best.  Hardees still makes their biscuits from scratch every morning.  I know an 84 year-old woman who works at our Hardees two days a week and she is the dough maker.  Gb is right about hardees though.  You have to have rims and baggy pants to fit in there.  It is a black run enterprise now.  I only buy breakfast there now.

I'm in the road a lot when I'm working and Hardees is way up on my list for a burger or their chili dogs. Followed closely by Wendys and Burger King. I've been on strike with McDonalds's for about 15 years now.

My favorites is a Sonic burger for lunch, I go for the supe sonic burger with mustard and jalepenos.
When it comes to breakfast biscuits I really enjoy a Braums saugae/egg/cheese biscuit.

Both are Okie originals. Shoot Sonic started right here in Shawnee.

Hardee's USED to have good biscuits.  The ones here in Illinois for that last 4 or 5 years have turned their biscuits into hard, heavy, pucks that you could break a tooth on.  I used to like them for breakfeast and their fried chicken wasn't bad.  For breakfeast now, if it's fast food, it's a mc D's sausage biscuit.

I'll concede that Hardees is probably the best burger to be had by the fast food joints (Jack in the Box ain't too terrible either, and McDonalds is the absolute worst), but truthfully I don't really like any of the fast-food burger places.  Cooking a burger fast (or alternatively, pre-cooking it) just has a bad effect on the taste.   They necessarily have to keep their patties really thin so they'll cook faster - which is why so many places offer "double" or "triple" burgers that barely add up to what a single patty would amount to if you cooked it at home on the grill.  For those times when I want a burger, a decent bar'n'grill or steakhouse will win every time, and usually is only a few dollars more, particularly with the way most fast food places are raising prices these days.  In general though I just don't like much fast food.  Taco Bell compared to a real Mexican place is just disgusting, though  fast food pizza is *alright*, and I've found that most fried chicken places are pretty decent too.  Still though, if I can I try to avoid chain restaurants (or at least large chains - local places with only 2 or 3 locations are ok) altogether.  Regional cuisine is an amazing thing.  Going places and sampling the food there is a wonderful thing, and having the same restaurants everywhere (particularly ones built around cooking food as fast and quickly as possible, rather than having it taste good) is just boring IMHO.

When did that happen? I can remember Sonic being here in Anniston, AL back when I was a boy and as a teen we used it as an occasional hang out as I seem to recall. How long have they been around?

When I go back to the southeast to visit friends & family I always stop at Winn-Dixie for my road food. I get a 2# box of fried catfish, from their deli, and I'm good to go for several hours.

I'm not a fan of fast food at all, but there are times when you just don't have a choice.  Every year I spend about three weeks on the road fishing and photographing as a part of my job.  The outdoors editor and I concluded this spring that of the fast food joints, Hardee's consistently had the best sausage and biscuits, and they were open well before daylight.
